Rutgers to play Wake in bowl

Rutgers will replace Texas A&M in the Gator Bowl against Wake Forest after an NCAA committee decided to adhere to an existing policy for making teams with 5-7 records bowl eligible.

The NCAA football oversight committee also announced that any bowl can be moved to as late as Jan. 10 if the schools involved need additional time to prepare.

The Gator Bowl will keepits scheduled date and 11 a.m. Eastern kickoff time on New Year’s Eve, meaning Rutgers will have less than a week to get ready to play one of the highest-scoring teams in the country.

Texas A&M pulled out of Wednesday’s game because of a lack of available players.

Penn State

Safety Jonathan Sutherland tweeted that “after careful thought and considerat­ion” he has decided to return to Penn State for his sixth year of eligibilit­y. Sutherland has tallied 94 total tackles, two forced fumbles and an intercepti­on in his four years as a Nittany Lion.

Hawaii

The Hawaii Bowl was canceled Thursday on the eve of the game after Hawaii withdrew because of COVID-19, season-ending injuries and transfers. “We are disappoint­ed our season has to end this way,” coach Todd Graham said.

Clemson

Clemson promoted Graham Neff to athletic director, elevating an assistant in the department who is well-liked by the program’s coaches. Neff takes over for Dan Radakovich, who left Clemson after nine years to become athletic director at Miami.

Bowl games

Frisco Football Classic: Brett Gabbert completed 22 of 31 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns, Kenny Tracy scored on an 8-yard run and Graham Nicholson kicked two field goals as Miami (Ohio) beat North Texas, 27-14, in Frisco Texas. Miami finished 7-6 and the Mean Green 6-7.

Gasparilla: Quarterbac­k Mikey Keene went 14 of 22 for 144 yards and one touchdown and Isaiah Bowser rushed 35 times for 155 yards and two scores as UCF (8-4) defeated in-state rival Florida, 29-17, in Tampa, Fla. The Gators finished 6-7.
