Carney’s 35 propel Butler past Hempfield

Four players reach double figures

Devin Carney scored 35 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead Butler to an 8177 win against Hempfield in a non-section game Thursday night at Butler. Carney, a 6foot-1 senior guard, was a member of the Post-Gazette’s Fab 5 Team last season. Butler improved to 4-2, while Hempfield falls to 2-4.

Carney was one of four Golden Tornados in double figures. The others were: Madden Clement (18), Braylon Littlejohn (14) and Raine Gratzmille­r (12).

Hempfield’s Sean Gordon led all scorers with 34 points, including seven 3s. Harrison Sowers connected on five 3s for the Spartans and finished with 17 points.

Other top boys games

• In a game involving Class 3A-ranked teams, No. 4 Ellwood City (5-2) posted a 66-49 road victory against No. 3 Aliquippa (2-2). Steven Antonio scored 31 points and connected on four 3s for the Wolverines, while Josh Roth and Alexander Roth added 14 and 11, respective­ly. Donovan Walker had 16 for the Quips.

• Gavin Cole and Brandon McCullough combined for 42 points to lead Peters Township (3-4) to a non-section win against visiting Hampton (33). Cole led all scorers with 23, while McCullough chipped in 19. Liam Mignogna scored 18 points for the Talbots, while Eric Weeks added 17.

• Eli Yofan scored 23 points, including 10 in the first quarter, as Fox Chapel posted a 68-57 victory in a non-section game at Seneca Valley. Yofan, a member of the Post-Gazette’s Fab 5 team last season, also had 10 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assists. Luke Lawson led the Raiders (1-5) with 16 points.

• Ty Keffer scored 26 points and Isaac Trout added 22 to lead Southmorel­and (22) to a 68-58 win against visiting East Allegheny (2-4). Mike Smith led the Wildcats

with 26 points.

Top girls games

• Latrobe rallied from a 7point deficit by outscoring Armstrong 21-12 in the final quarter to pull out a 52-50 win in a non-section game played at Latrobe. Freshman

Carly Berk capped the rally by tipping in a shot and drawing a foul with 0.3 seconds left. She made the free throw to complete the 3-point play and clinch the victory. Elie Snyder led the Wildcats (4-3) with 16 points. Emma Paul scored 26 points, including three 3s, in a losing effort for the River Hawks (3-1).

• Olivia Lyscik and Reagan Kadlecik combined for 43 points as Montour improved to 5-2 with a 60-42 non-section road victory against Aquinas Academy (3-3). Lyscik led all scorers with 23 points, while Kadlecik had 20. Bella Hite had 13 points for the Crusaders.

• Baldwin, ranked No. 5 in Class 6A, outscored Fox Chapel 28-3 in the first quarter and rolled to a 69-36 victory in a non-section game at Baldwin. Morgan Altavilla led the Highlander­s (5-2) with 20 points. Elise Smith scored 17 points for the Foxes (3-4).

• Union outscored Mohawk 17-2 in the second quarter to break open a close game and roll to a 52-28 win against visiting Mohawk in a non- section game. Kelly Cleaver scored 20 points to lead Union (6-0), ranked No. 4 in Class 1A. Erynne Capalbo tallied 11 points to lead Mohawk (2-3), a Class 3A school.

• Greensburg Central Catholic built a 35-23 lead at the half and held on for a 61-52 road victory against Seton LaSalle in a non-section game. Bailey Kuhn scored 24 points for the Centurions (31), while teammate Mya Morgan added 13. Ava Dursi led the Rebels (4-2) with 17 points.

Stars of the night

• Fans who attended Mount Pleasant’s girls nonsection game against Laurel Highlands saw Tiffany Zelmore and Aareanna Griffith account for most of their teams’ offense. Zelmore scored 33 for the Vikings (32), who posted a 61-48 victory. Griffith scored 31 in a losing effort for the Mustangs (0-7).

• Abbie Johns connected on seven 3s and finished with 31 points to lead Kiski Area (2-3) to a 55-33 win against visiting Connellsvi­lle (0-6). Hilary Claycomb led the Falcons with 15 points.
