Mt. Lebanon outlasts Bethel Park

-

Neither Bethel Park nor Mt. Lebanon did much scoring against each other when they met for the first time this season.

In fact, their combined point total was the same as what New Castle itself scored in its win against South Fayette.

But in the end, all it took was one good shot at the right time for the host Blue Devils to pull off the upset of Bethel Park.

Lucas Garofoli scored 14 points, but the biggest was his fourth 3-pointer of the night with 3.3 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give Mt. Lebanon (7-5. 3-1) a 3734 win against Class 6A No. 4 Bethel Park (10-2, 3-1) in a Section 2 battle.

Garofoli’s hoop accounted for the only points either team scored in the two extra periods as Mt. Lebanon held Bethel Park to 17.5 points below its season average.

Dylan Waldo scored 19 points in the loss for the Black Hawks.

Other top boys games

• North Allegheny (8-4, 2-4) continued its recent slide while Class 6A No. 5 Pine-Richland continued to rebound from a poor start with a series of victories. The Rams got 21 points from Luke Shanahan and 20 from Joey Dudkowski as they handed the Tigers their fourth consecutive loss, 72-64, as they avenged a setback in their first meeting.

• Brandon Cummings did most of the damage for Lincoln Park with a game-high 27, but it was senior guard and Duquesne recruit L.A. Pratt who put it away when he hit the winning basket with five seconds remaining in regulation to close out the Class 4A No. 3 Leopards (6-3, 4-1), 51-49, in a Section 2 win against No. 5 Montour (8-3, 4-2).

• J.D. Azulay and Jerome Mullins each scored 20 and helped Class 1A No. 5 Rochester (3-6, 2-1) to a four-point lead against No. 3 Union (111, 4-0) at the intermission. But Mark Stanley scored 10 of his 24 in the third quarter to aid in a 78-58 come-frombehind Section 1 victory against the Rams.

• Markus Frank and Adou Thiero combined for 60 of Quaker Valley’s points. Both also had double-doubles as Frank finished with 32 points and 12 rebounds and Thiero 28 points and 10 boards as the Class 4A No. 2 Quakers (9-0, 6-0) rolled past Beaver, 78-47, in a Section 2 tilt.

• Makhai Valentine dropped in four 3-pointers as part of his game-high 33, but it wasn’t enough for Steel Valley (4-8, 0-5) to win its first Class 3A Section 3 game as B.J. Harvey led three Valley (1-11, 1-4) players in double figures with 19 in a 58-57 Vikings win, their first of the year.

Milestone

• Charleroi’s Will Wagner needed 27 points for 1,000, had 23 in the first half, including 14 in the second quarter, and finished with a game-high 38. But Brownsville (7-5, 4-1) spoiled the ending with a 6662 overtime victory against the Cougars (8-3, 2-2).

Star of the night

• At halftime, Class 3A No. 3 Aliquippa (5-4, 1-1) had No. 2 Seton LaSalle (9-2, 4-0) on the ropes, but could not provide the knockout punch. The Rebels, who trailed by 21 points at the intermission, roared back to tie as Connor Sprat hit seven 3-pointers as part of his 29 points to lead the Rebels to a 74-72 overtime victory against the Quips.
