Greensburg C.C. takes 2A clash

On a night the top-ranked boys team in WPIAL Class 2A set the all-time WPIAL record for consecutiv­e wins, the No. 2 team also picked up one of its biggest victories of the season.

Brevan Williams and Dylan Parsons scored 21 points apiece to lead Greensburg Central Catholic to an 83-76 win at Winchester Thurston in a key Section 3 game.

With the win, the Centurions (11-1, 5-0) remained the only team in the section without a section loss. Winchester Thurston (7-4, 4-1) and Serra Catholic (6-8, 4-1) are tied for second place.

“It puts us in a real good spot,” said Greensburg C.C. coach Christian Hyland. “A lot of the teams at the top [of the section] we get at home the second time around.”

Tyree Turner added 19 points and Ryan Appleby 12 for the Centurions, who used a 22-14 edge in the third-quarter to take a double-digit lead.

Winchester Thurston was led by Jackson Juzang and Lance Nicholls, who each scored 20 points. Juzang’s total included the 1,000th point of his career.

Other top boys games

• Class 5A No. 5 Penn Hills (13-2, 6-2) jumped to a 19-point halftime lead and held on to beat visiting Franklin Regional (5-11, 4-5), 5448, in Section 3. Daemar Kelly led Penn Hills with 20 points and George Mitchell chipped in 17.

• Rodney Gallagher scored 21 points and Brandon Davis added 14 to propel Class 5A No. 1 Laurel Highlands (16-0, 6-0) to a 75-41 win at Thomas Jefferson (4-12, 2-4) in Section 1. The Mustangs led Thomas Jefferson, 28-3, after one quarter.

• Washington (11-1, 8-0), ranked No. 3 in Class 3A, strengthen­ed its grip on the Section 4 lead by beating visiting Brentwood (11-6, 6-3), 6348. The Little Prexies got 32 points from Tayshawn Levy, while Carter Betz led Brentwood with 21.

• Cameron Lindsey tallied 18 points to lead a trio of players scoring in double figures for Class 3A No. 4 Aliquippa (9-6, 4-1), which went on the road and took down Avonworth (12-5, 3-3), 63-53, in Section 2. Jordan Kolenda paced the Antelopes with 16 points.

• Class 1A No. 2 Imani Christian (10-5, 5-0) raced to an 18-point first-quarter lead and coasted to an 80-64 win at No. 5 Leechburg (11-3, 2-2) in a key Section 3 game. Virgil Hall paced the Saints with 16 points, while Braylan Lovelace led Leechburg with 32.

Milestones

• Alex Smith reached 1,000 career points in helping Class 6A No. 1 North Hills (150, 9-0) remain unbeaten after a 76-62 win against visiting Butler (9-7, 3-6) in Section 1. Smith scored 13 points in the game to increase his career total to 1,003. Royce Parham led the Indians with 23 points, while Butler’s Devin Carney finished with 36.

Star of the night

• Vinny Clark made a 3pointer at the buzzer to give Freeport (10-6, 5-3) a 56-53 home win against Burrell (107, 6-3) in Class 4A Section 1. Clark finished with a team-high 16 points. Burrell’s Brandon Coury scored 20, including a layup that tied the score with 13 seconds left.
