Peters Township beats Baldwin

-

Baldwin went into the playoffs as the No. 6 seed, but had to feel pretty good about its matchup with Peters Township after beating the Indians in two regular-season meetings.

But the third time was not a charm.

William Tomko scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal 35 seconds into the third period and tacked on a pair of assists as No. 3 Peters Township (15-5-1) rolled into the PIAA Class 3A semifinals with a 6-2 victory over Baldwin (10-8-3).

Baldwin won the Class 2A Penguins Cup and state title last year and moved up to Class 3A this season.

Trailing 3-1, Ryan Sulinski scored for the Highlanders to close the gap to 3-2 at 2:23 of the third period. But Peters Township poured it on with three consecutive goals to close it out.

Other Class 3A North Allegheny 8, Bethel Park 1:

Tigers forward Connor Chi usually saves his best for the playoffs and this was no exception. Chi scored four goals and Matt Irvin chipped in a goal and two assists as North Allegheny (18-2-1) moved into the semifinals to play Seneca Valley.

Class 2A Franklin Regional 10, Butler 2:

It’s not often you see a team put up doubledigits in a playoff game, but the Panthers made very short work of the Golden Tornado in a running- clock romp. Matty Knizner and Luke Lavrich each scored two goals, while Chase Williams had a five-point night with a goal and four assists.

Penn-Trafford 5, Meadville 2:

Bryce Kropczynski, Alex Sciullo and Xavier Solomon scored first- period goals and Jackson Kerrigan had 19 saves as the Warriors (16-4-0) avenged a 6-2 regular-season loss to the Bulldogs (12-8-0).

Class 1A McDowell 3, North Catholic 2:

Ryan Berry scored with the extra attacker on with 24.5 seconds remaining in regulation to tie it for No. 2 North Catholic (15-42), but Alex Lin scored with 3.1 seconds remaining in overtime to win it in a upset for seventh-seeded McDowell (13-8-0).
