Chartiers Valley races to big win
For more than two quarters, Hollidaysburg was stride for stride with Chartiers Valley. Then there was no corralling the Colts down the stretch.
Chartiers Valley was terrific in the second half and defeated Hollidaysburg, 70-47, in a PIAA Class 5A secondround game Saturday night at Norwin. The win puts the Colts (26-2) into the quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive season.
The score was tied, 40-40, with 5:16 left in the third quarter. Chartiers Valley took an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter and the Colts ended the game on a 30-7 run. Hollidaysburg (24-2) was 0 for 15 from the field in the fourth quarter.
Perri Page had 20 points and 17 rebounds to lead Chartiers Valley. Hallie Cowan had 18 points, including five 3 -pointers, and Aislin Malcolm 17.
Other Class 5A game
McKeesport 68, Oakland Catholic 56: McKeesport (225) outscored Oakland Catholic (14-11) by a 22-11 margin in the third quarter at Bethel Park. Rachael Manfredo scored 26 points for McKeesport and Rachel Haver had 27 for Oakland Catholic.
Class 4A
Blackhawk 72, Southmoreland 52: Alena Fusetti scored 29 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead WPIAL champion Blackhawk (26-0) at North Allegheny. Blackhawk held a 39-23 lead at halftime. Gracie Spadaro led Southmoreland (19-5) with 16 points. Kassie Potts added 16 for Blackhawk.
Delone Catholic 34, Knoch 28: Knoch (22-4) had its worst offensive game of the season, scoring only 26 points in the first three quarters but still leading by two points. Delone Catholic (28-1) then outscored the Knights, 10-2, in the fourth quarter to pull out the win at Altoona. Karlee Buterbaugh scored 9 to lead Knoch.
Class 1A
Otto-Eldred 56, Bishop Canevin 51: WPIAL champion Bishop Canevin (17-10) looked to be in good shape, holding a 41-31 lead after three quarters. But Otto-Eldred (24-3) came storming back to win at DuBois. Otto-Eldred outscored Bishop Canevin, 25-10, in the fourthr.
Union 38, Elk County Catholic 35: Union (22-2) scored only 10 points in the second half but hung on to beat Elk County Catholic (254). The Union boys and girls teams made it to the PIAA quarterfinals.
