Lake Erie and tributaries

(Erie County): The midsection of Elk Creek was perfect for steelheading, with emerald shiner fly patterns and egg sacs being most productive. In Union City Reservoir, anglers caught muskies, Northern pike, largemouth bass and panfish. Light rain and 42-degree temperatures Friday were expected to turn to snow overnight. A winter storm was considered possible Saturday with snow showers Sunday.

Tionesta Lake, outflow (Forest County): No open water on the lake, but much of the ice was questionable and the boat launch was closed. Below the dam the outflow was high but fishable near the wall, and Trout Stocked Waters Open to Year-Round Fishing regulations apply.

Allegheny River

(Forest County): Anglers reported catches of walleye and Northerns in high water in the Tionesta Pool stretching from Route 36 to Sherman Island.

The Sand and Gravel launch was open.

North Park Lake (Allegheny County): At this Stocked Trout Waters Open for Year-Round Fishing impoundment, the state Fish and Boat Commission stocked rainbow and golden rainbow trout Tuesday. Twin Lakes (Westmoreland County): State stocking trucks made a delivery of rainbow and golden rainbow trout at the upper and lower lakes Monday. Oliver Rhames of Greensburg reported the release of two rainbows and one golden rainbow Wednesday, and said he saw anglers catching additional trout. Catch and release trout fishing is legal until opening day on both lakes managed for Stocked Trout Waters Open for Year-Round Fishing.

Cross Creek Lake (Washington County): Panfish? Maybe in a giant pan. A crappie measuring 17 inches, 2 pounds, 10 ounces was caught from shore using a small jig on March 4. The angler’s name was unknown, but the fish was photographed and released. Multiple catches of big bluegills were reported before this week’s plunging temperatures as males made a pre-spawning run to shallow water. Largemouth bass in the 2- to 3-pound range were caught.

Canonsburg Lake (Washington County): Managed for Stocked Trout Waters Open for Year-Round Fishing, the lake was stocked with rainbows and golden rainbows Saturday.
