Pirates obtain Cubs pitcher Stout
The Pirates acquired lefthanded pitcher Eric Stout from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations Tuesday. Stout, 29, has pitched in five MLB games in his career, though there was a four-year gap between them.
In 2018, he allowed six earned runs in 2⅓ innings of relief for the Kansas City Royals. Stout then signed with the San Diego Padres as a minor league free agent that offseason, was released before he could play with them and has since been a member of the Cincinnati Reds, Miami Marlins and Cubs organizations.
Stout made it back to the majors this season with the Cubs and has allowed two earned runs in 3⅔ innings , covering two appearances. In those appearances, Stout was mostly a two-pitch reliever, relying on a fourseam fastball that averages 92.7 mph and a low- 80s slider paired with it.
With the Cubs’ Class AAA affiliate, he fanned 48 opponents in just 29⅔ innings, marking a giant step forward from his career average strikeout rate.
Braves
Pitcher Max Fried became the fifth member of the World Series champion Atlanta Braves to go to salary arbitration, asking for $6.85 million while the team argued for $ 6.6 million. Fried, a 28-year-old lefthander, was 14-7 with a 3.04 ERA last year and was 2-2 in the postseason. Fried made $3.5 million last year and is eligible for free agency after the 2024 season.
Cardinals
First baseman Paul Goldschmidt was out of the lineup for Tuesday’s game against Milwaukee due to what manager Oliver Marmol described as back tightness. “He’ll experience it from time to time,” Marmol said.
Mets
Utility man Jeff McNeil is considered day to day after leaving the game Monday against the Miami Marlins with tightness in his right hamstring, according to manager Buck Showalter. Showalter characterized the results of McNeil’s MRI as “good news” but did not specify what the test revealed.
