Pitt lands two offensive linemen

Pitt football closed out its run of June recruiting weekends with verbal commitment­s from its first two offensive linemen. They bring the 2023 class to 13 confirmed members, 11 of whom committed this month. With the additions, Pitt’s class moved up to 26th nationally in Rivals’ team rankings.

Colin Van Rooy was the first to announce Sunday. The 6-foot-6, 300-pounder from Ohio had eight offers from MAC and FCS schools. Ryan Carretta was the second to announce. Carretta is also a three-star blocker from Ohio. The 6-foot-5, 318pounder had 13 offers from Power Five schools, including Michigan, Michigan State, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Track and field

Noah Lyles pulled in front of teenage sensation Erriyon Knighton at the finish to win the 200 meters in 19.67 seconds at the U.S. track and field championsh­ips in Eugene, Ore. In the 800, Olympic gold medalist Athing Mu was challenged the last 100 meters by Ajee Wilson, but pushed to a first-place finish in 1:57.16. Sha’Carri Richardson did not qualify for Sunday’s 200 final, her only remaining chance to make the U.S. team for the worlds. Her time in the semifinal, 22.47 seconds, put her out of contention. Abby Steiner of Kentucky, who set a college record in the 200 at this year’s NCAA championsh­ips, won the event in 21.77, the leading time in the world this season and a personal best.

Baseball

Joshuan Sandoval hit two grand slams and host Windy City routed the Washington Wild Things, 14-6. Thomas Hart took the loss for the Wild Things (25-14). The Thunderbol­ts improved to 18-19.

Pro basketball

Courtney Vandersloo­t scored 18 points, including a buzzer-beating 3, and host Chicago (13-5) edged Minnesota 88-85. The Lynx fell to 5-14. ... Courtney Williams scored 17 points, and Connecticu­t (13-6) held host Atlanta (810) to one field goal in the final seven minutes in a 72-61 WNBA win.
