San Diego starter combines with closer Hader to defeat rival Giants
Joe Musgrove had a season-high 11 strikeouts and Manny Machado drove in three runs and San Diego completed a three- game sweep Wednesday with a 5-4 win in San Francisco.
Luis Campusano and Jake Cronenworth added RBIs for San Diego, which has won five of its past six games.
Musgrove ( 9- 6) allowed three runs and three hits with two walks in 6⅔ innings. AllStar closer Josh Hader overcame his recent struggles to secure his 30th save in 33 opportunities and his first with the Padres.
Austin Wynns, Thairo Estrada, Luis Gonzalez and Joc Pederson drove in runs for the Giants, who lost their seventh game in a row, matching a season high.
Alex Wood (8-12) lost his third consecutive start, giving up four runs and five hits with five strikeouts in 4⅔ innings.
The Padres improved to a major league-best 26-13 in one-run games.
“I think this was huge to be able to win three one-run games,” San Diego manager Bob Melvin said. “That’s how we were doing it earlier in the season in finding a way to win these games as we did here this weekend.”
