Washington drops Clairton to 0-2

Clairton, perenniall­y one of the top teams in WPIAL Class 1A, has stumbled out of the gate for the second year in a row as the Bears (0-2) lost to 2A powerhouse Washington, 48-20, at home.

Logan Carlisle led the Class 2A No. 3 Little Prexies (2-0) with 134 yards passing and three touchdowns. Zach Welsh added 120 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground. Washington led 2012 at halftime.

Clairton began last season 0-2 in non-conference play before reeling off seven consecutiv­e victories to qualify for the 1A playoffs.

The No. 3 Bears will try to rebound Sept. 10 when they play Class 1A No. 2 Our Lady Sacred Heart at Moon High Stadium in its final non-league contest. They open Eastern Conference play Sept. 17 at Riverview. Four teams in the Eastern Conference have opened the season 0-2 in nonconfere­nce play.

Ligonier Valley 27, Southmorel­and 18: Ligonier Valley (2-0) claimed victory at 3A

Southmorel­and ( 0- 2). The Rams were led by Haden Sierocky’s three touchdowns. He scored a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown and another on a kickoff return of 84 yards.

Imani Christian 36, Brentwood 21: David Davis rushed for 261 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries to lead the visiting Saints (1-1) over the Spartans (1-1). Imani led 16-14 at halftime. Tavian Miller led Brentwood with two touchdowns.

Keystone Oaks 27, South Park 15: Shawn Reick netted 118 yards rushing and scored a fourth quarter touchdown of 10 yards in the battle of the Eagles at Dormont Stadium. The Golden Eagles (2-0) hold a 17-6 lead in the all-time series with South Park (0-2).

Apollo-Ridge 34, Valley 19: The host Vikings (2-0) topped 3A Valley (0-2) as Nick Curci rushed for 249 yards on 31 carries. Curci scored on runs of 30, 17 and 42 yards.

McGuffey 35, Ringgold 7: Philip McCuen scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and passed to Kyle Brookman for another as the host Highlander­s (2-0) routed the 4A Rams (0-2). Brookman also scored a rushing touchdown covering six yards.

Class 1A

Mapletown 49. Frazier 8: Landan Stevenson became the third player in Maples history to rush for 4,000 career yards when his 195-yard effort against the visiting Commodores led Mapletown (2-0) over Frazier (0-2). Stevenson scored touchdowns on runs of one, 49, 39, 34 and 33 yards on just 10 carries. Stevenson has 4,020 career yards.

Chartiers- Houston 31, West Greene 21: The host Pioneers (1-1) squandered a two--touchdown lead as the Bucs (2-0) stormed back to win. Zeke Watkins scored twice for Char-Houston. Terry Fetsko threw a touchdown pass to Jake Mele to spark the comeback. Colin Brady scored all three touchdowns for West Greene. Brady finished with 187 rushing yards.

Bentworth 21, Avella 7: Vitali Daniels scored all three Bentworth (2-0) touchdowns at Avella (0-2). Avella was led by Cole Jaworowski who passed for 137 yards.

South Side 7, Riverside 6: The host Rams (2-0) edged the 2A Panthers (0-1). Ryan Navarra led South Side with 99 yards rushing and scored his team’s only touchdown on a 9-yard run in the second quarter. Robert Janis led Riverside with 142 yards rushing and scored on a 3yard run.

Riverview 38, Carlynton 8:

The Raiders (1-1) won at Carlynton (0-2) as Rio Stotts and Landon Johnson each scored a pair of touchdowns for Riverview. Johnson finished with 147 yards rushing on 14 carries.

Jefferson- Morgan 15, Waynesburg 8: The Rockets (1-1) won on the road against the 2A Raiders (0-2). It was scoreless at halftime. Chase Fox scored the only Waynesburg touchdown on a 7-yard run.

California 48, Charleroi 0:

The Trojans (2-0) blanked the host 2A Cougars (0-2). Jake Layhue led California with two touchdowns. Layhue also threw a 39-yard scoring pass to Caden Powell.

Union 20, Ellwood City 6:

Union (1-1) downed visiting 2A Ellwood City (0-2). Braylon Thomas, Matt Stanley and Mike Gunn scored the Union touchdowns.
