1910 Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall was dedicated.

1933 After President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered “captive mine” owners to make peace, 75,000 miners of Western Pennsylvan­ia returned to work. Philip Murray, internatio­nal vice president of the United Mine Workers, and Thomas Moses, president of the H.C. Frick Coke Co., began negotiatin­g difference­s.

1969 Danny Murtaugh was named to manage the Pirates for the 1970 season. 1985 The hijackers of the Achille Lauro cruise liner surrendere­d two days after seizing the vessel in the Mediterran­ean. (Hijackers killed disabled passenger Leon Klinghoffe­r during the standoff.)

2012 Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was sentenced in Bellefonte, Centre County, to 30 to 60 years in prison following his June 2012 conviction on 45 counts of sexual abuse of boys.
