We must support brave Ukraine

-

I am so outraged by James Bukes’s letter, (“Ukraine must give up territory,” Oct. 6), that I can barely breathe. Bukes claims to “have great sympathy for the people of Ukraine in this period of crisis.” If by “period of crisis.” Bukes is referring to the illegal, immoral, Russian invasion of Ukraine that has resulted in the murder, rape, and kidnapping of thousands of Ukrainian innocents, I’m not so sure how comforting his sympathy is.

And if by “great sympathy,” Bukes is referring to his proposed plan to have a peace conference entered into where we (the US) tell the Ukrainians that we “will end all aid to them unless they agree to a compromise with Russia — a compromise that will almost necessarily mean giving up some portion of the eastern provinces” — he can keep his sympathy!

Why in the world should Ukraine have to give up territory? To reward tyranny? To encourage despots? To strengthen our enemies? To make the world less safe?

What then is our position when Russia invades Poland,

and the next country? The proud people of Ukraine have demonstrated tremendous courage and resilience; for our aid to be predicated upon such blatant cowardice is despicable!

We should have never allowed Russia to get this far. Putin holds the world hostage with his threats of nuclear war while we watch. We should have provided Ukraine with the aid they needed from the outset. Now the cost is significantly higher, in financial terms, human life and world peace.

You don’t appease a bully. Nor do you seek out conflict, but when conflict knocks on your door, you don’t make it comfortable in a few of your rooms!
