Ovechkin breaks mark in loss

Nets 787th goal, breaks NHL’s one-team record

Alex Ovechkin scored his 787th career goal to break Gordie Howe’s record for scoring with one team, but the Arizona Coyotes scored three times in the third period to rally for a 3-2 win against the Washington Capitals Saturday night in Washington.

Nick Ritchie had two goals, including the tiebreaker with 36 seconds remaining, and Josh Brown also scored for Arizona, which trailed 2-0 early in the third. Shayne Gostisbehe­re had two assists and Karel Vejmelka stopped 33 shots.

Anthony Mantha had a goal and an assist for Washington, which gave up a lead for the fourth game in a row. Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves.

With the Capitals on their third power play of the game, Ovechkin fired a one-timer off a pass from Trevor van Riemsdyk past Vejmelka with just under 9 minutes left in the second period to open the scoring. It moved Ovechkin past Howe for the most goals with one franchise in NHL history. The 289th power-play goal of his career extended his point streak to five games.

Ovechkin is now 14 goals away tying Howe for second on the NHL’s all-time goals list and 107 from Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record.

Other games

Red Wings 3, Islanders 0: Ville Husso made 26 saves, and Detroit snapped visiting New York’s five-game win streak. Dominik Kubalik had a goal and an assist, helping Detroit to its third win in four games.

Avalanche 5, Blue Jackets 1: Artturi Lehkonen scored in his home country, and Colorado swept the two-game series in Tampere, Finland. Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon each had three assists for the Stanley Cup champion Avalanche, who won for the fourth time in six games overall.

Golden Knights 6, Canadiens 4: Reilly Smith scored two goals to help Vegas win its seventh in a row. Nick Suzuki had two goals for Montreal.

Lightning 5, Sabres 3: Nikita Kucherov had an empty-net goal and three assists, and Nick Perbix added his first NHL goal to help Tampa Bay win at home. Kucherov extended his goal streak to six games with 58 seconds remaining. He also has a 10-game pints streak ongoing.

Flyers 2, Senators 1: Ottawa’s Claude Giroux scored his 300th NHL goal, but the Flyers won on the road. The game was Giroux’s first against his former team.

Maple Leafs 2, Bruins 1: Auston Matthews’ second goal of the game came proved to be the difference as Toronto snapped Boston’s seven-game winning streak.

Notes

One day after the Bruins signed Mitchell Miller. Commission­er Gary Bettman said that Miller is not eligible to play.

Miller was selected by Arizona in the fourth round of the 2020 draft, but the Coyotes relinquish­ed his draft rights after it was learned he bullied a Black classmate with developmen­tal disabiliti­es in middle school.
