Music Notes: Graham Nash, Elvis Costello, R.E.M. and more

- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Graham Nash, the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, will bring his Sixty Years of Songs & Stories Tour to Carnegie of Homestead Music Hall in Munhall on Saturday, April 22.

Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. at DruskyEnt.com/LibraryMusicHall.com. Reserved tickets range from $49.75 - $96.75.

Nash, along with being a solo artist, was a founding member of both the Hollies and Crosby, Stills and Nash. His body of work, which began in 1964, includes such classics “Stop Stop Stop,” “Marrakesh Express,” “Pre-Road Downs,” “Teach Your Children,” “Our House,” “Chicago/We Can Change the World” and “Military Madness.”

He is preparing for the spring release of “Now,” his first new studio album since 2016’s “This Path Tonight.” It follows his recent live album, “Graham Nash: Live,” which features him performing his first two solo albums, “Songs For Beginners” and “Wild Tales,” in their entirety.

He will be joined on the tour by his longtime musical partners, Shane Fontayne (guitar and vocals) and Todd Caldwell (keyboards and vocals), performing favorites from across his 60-year career.

It begins at 8 p.m.

Elvis on the road

Elvis Costello, another Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, is launching an 11-date tour that will come as close as a four-hour drive from Pittsburgh.

Costello, who last performed here at Heinz Hall in 2017 (amidst some sound glitches), will wrap up a 10-night run at New York City’s Gramercy Theatre — doing “100 Songs and More” solo and with Steve Nieve — and then hook up with his band, The Imposters, for a tour called “The Boy Named If & Other Favourites.”

The band — Nieve, Pete Thomas and Davey Faragher — will once again be joined on the road by guitarist Charlie

Sexton, a former member of Bob Dylan’s band. The stops include Bethlehem, Pa. (Feb. 23), Atlantic City (Feb. 25), Ithaca, NY. (Feb. 28) and Washington, D.C. (March 9).

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at elviscostello.com.

‘Chronic Town’ at 40

R.E.M. fans should mark Dec. 15 on their calendars.

On that night, Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson will lead a celebration of the 40th anniversary of R.E.M.’s debut EP, “Chronic Town.”

It will stream at 8 p.m. from the Coca- Cola Roxy in Atlanta on Veeps.com or via the Veeps app.

The show will be hosted by comedian David Cross, with Robinson and other special guests performing the five-track EP in its entirety. Additional guest performances will include fan-favorite tracks spanning the decades. All net proceeds from the concert will benefit Planned Parenthood.

“Growing up in Atlanta in the 1980s, R.E.M. was the preeminent band of that era,” Robinson said in a statement. “Their music was a huge influence not only on the Atlanta music scene but also on my brother and me. I’m so happy to be able to put together this celebration for a band that meant so much to us and music, and Chronic Town is what started it all.”

The house band will consist of Robinson on guitar and vocals, drummer Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees, R.E.M.) and bassist Sven Pipien (The Black Crowes). They will be joined Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes, Darius Rucker, Steve Wynn, Kevin Kinney of Atlanta-based rock band Drivin’ N Cryin’, John Cameron Mitchell, Fred Armisen, David Ryan Harris, Lenny Kaye of Patti Smith Band, Elf Power, Pylon Reenactment Society, and producer of Chronic Town, Mitch Easter of Let’s Active.

Carlton’s ‘Future Pain’

On the heels of her recent tour with Stevie Nicks, singer-songwriter Vanessa Carlton is heading out on the 2023 Future Pain Tour, which will include a March 11 date at Jergels.

Tickets will go on sale Friday. “Future Pain” is a track from Carlton’s latest album, “Love Is An Art,” which was produced by the legendary Dave Fridmann (MGMT, Flaming Lips).

According to her label, it “explores the eternal seesaw that is human connection: the push, the pull, the balance, the bottoming out.”
