Small gestures go a long way during ER wait

- SANDY SPENCER Hampton

Sitting in the emergency room all day isn’t anybody’s idea of fun. But on Sept. 26 it was necessary to take my husband to UPMC Passavant.

We arrived at 10:30 a.m., he got checked in, and then was told to stay in the waiting room. The ER filled up quite quickly and the hours ticked on by until 8:30 p.m.

During that time we saw people put money in the vending machines for others (because the credit card feature wasn’t working in any machine).

There was an older woman in a wheelchair, obviously there by herself. We observed someone go over to check on her, fix her feet on the chair pads, and pull up the blankets around her shoulders.

A woman ordered pizza to be delivered. She ate what she wanted for dinner and then proceeded to walk around the waiting room

giving the rest away because she didn’t want to waste it.

A crummy day was brightened three different ways.
