U.S. eliminated in Davis Cup quarterfin­als

Italy beat the United States in a doubles decider Thursday in Malaga, Spain, to advance to the Davis Cup semifinals for the first time in eight years.

Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini defeated Tommy Paul and Jack Sock, 6-4, 6-4, to secure a 2-1 win for Italy after the teams split the singles matches.

The loss continues a drought in which the U.S. — holder of 32 Davis Cup titles — has not won the presigious men’s team event since 2007.

Italywill face Canada in one semifinal Friday. Croatia will meet Australia in the other.

Colleges

The parents of Katie Meyer, the Stanford soccer player who committed suicide in late February, have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Stanford, saying the 21-year-old goalie was distressed about facing discipline over an incident from August 2021. The lawsuit says Meyer spilled coffee on a Stanford football player who allegedly had sexually assaulted a teammate of Meyer. It also said that Meyer received a formal written notice on the evening of Feb. 28 — the same night she died — that charged her with a “Violation of the Fundamenta­l Standard.” The violation put her diploma on hold a few months before she was supposed to graduate, USA Today reported.

Pro basketball

The NBA gave Patrick Beverley a three-game suspension, two days after the Los Angeles Lakers guard was ejected for shoving Phoenix’s Deandre Ayton from behind. The suspension will cost Beverley $268,966, or about 2.1% of his $13 million salary.

Hockey

Hall of Fame defenseman Borje Salming, who starred for the Toronto Maple Leafs over 16 NHL seasons and was a trailblaze­r for Europeans who later made their mark in the world’s top pro hockey league, died at 71. He had Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Baseball

Phillies slugger Bryce Harper will miss the start of the 2023 season after he had reconstruc­tive right elbow surgery Wednesday. The operation was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.

• Nick Martinez and the Padres finalized a $26 million, three-year contract for the pitcher to remain with San Diego. Martinez went 4-4 with a 3.47 ERA with eight saves in 10 starts and 37 relief appearance­s for the Padres in 2022.
