The Pitt women’s basketball team grabbed a 50-49 lead against Towson with 7:02 to play on Liaku King’s layup and pulled away for a 72-62 victory in the Fort Myers (Fla.) Tipoff tournament. Dayshanett­e Harris scored 14 points with 5 rebounds and 3 assists to lead the Panthers (5-0).

• Lailani Kapinus sank two free throws with 0.9 seconds to play to lift Penn State (7-0) to a 60-59 win against Toledo and their best start since the 1996-97 season.

• The Penn State men improved to 6-1 with a 70-57 victory against Lafayette.

•North Carolina, the No. 1ranked men’s college team, lost to Iowa State, 70-65, in the Phil Knight Invitation­al tournament at Portland, Ore.

• Los Angeles Lakers starting point guard Patrick Beverley was suspended for three games for knocking Phoenix center Deandre Ayton in a game Tuesday.
