Houston survives Kent State threat

No. 2 Cougars remain on track to get top spot

Marcus Sasser scored 19 points, J’Wan Roberts added 11 and 14 rebounds, and No. 2 Houston held on to beat visiting Kent State, 49-44, on Saturday to give itself a chance to assume the No. 1 ranking in the next AP men’s poll.

Sasser was 8 for 8 from the free throw line to overcome a 5-of-16 shooting performanc­e, including 2 of 17 on 3-pointers.

After Malique Jacobs made a 3-pointer with 1:05 to play to give the Golden Flashes (52) a 44-43 lead, Jamal Shead made a layup to put Houston back ahead with 48 seconds to play. Jarace Walker blocked a layup by Sincere Carry with 34 seconds to play and Sasser finished the scoring with free throws.

Other Top 25 men Texas 91, UT Rio Grande 54:

The fourth-ranked Longhorns (5-0) doubled up Rio Grande in the first half and never looked back. Sir’Jabari Rice scored 19 points to lead Texas.

Maryland 81, Towson 70: Diamond Miller scored 20 points to lead the 14thranked Terrapins (5-2). Skye Williams scored 19 for Towson (3-2).

LSU 99, UAB 64: No. 12 LSU raced out to a 48-29

halftime lead. Angel Reese scored 25 points and added 10 rebounds for the Bayou Bengals (7-0)

Stanford 87, Grambling 50: Hannah Jump scored 19 points to lead No. 2 Stanford (7-1) in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown in Honolulu.

Notre Dame 85, Arizona State 65: Seventh-ranked Notre Dame (6-0) had little trouble advancing in the Goombay Splash tournament in Bimini.

Baylor 75, Villanova 70: The No. 21 Bears (4-1) scored the last five points of the game to fend off the 23rd-ranked Wildcats (5-1) at the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla.

District men

Evansville 54, Robert

Morris 53: Josh Corbin’s 22 points for the Colonials (2-4) led all scorers. RMU will play South Alabama at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Hostilo Hoops Community Classic at Enmarket Arena in Savannah, Ga.

District women

DePaul 74, Pitt 59: The Panthers saw their five-game winning streak end. Leading 31-30 at halftime, DePaul outscored Pitt (5-1) in the second half at the Fort Myers (Fla.) Tip-Off tournament. The Panthers were hurt by 20 turnovers.

Robert Morris 62, Canisius 52: Brooklyn Thrash scored 12 points and grabbed 5 rebounds to help the Colonials (5-1) coast to an easy victory at home. Canisius fell to 2-4.
