No. 1 UNC falls in four overtimes

Mark Sears had 24 points, five rebounds and five assists, and No. 18 Alabama sent top-ranked North Carolina to a second straight loss with a 103-101 victory in a quadruple-overtime thriller on Sunday in the third-place game of the Phil Knight Invitation­al.

Jahvon Quinerly scored 21 points for the Crimson Tide (6-1), who knocked off the top-ranked team for the first time since upsetting Stanford in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. Charles Bediako had 14 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks.

North Carolina ( 5- 2) wasted a big game for Caleb Love, who had 34 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Armando Bacot finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and R. J. Davis had 19 points and nine rebounds in the second four-overtime game in North Carolina history. The other was a victory over Tulane in 1976.

District men South Alabama 84, Robert Morris 70:

Isaiah Moore had 28 points in South Alabama’s victory against Robert Morris in Savannah, Ga.

Moore added five rebounds for the Jaguars (34). Kevin Samuel scored 23 points while shooting 11 of 17 from the field, and added 12 rebounds and four blocks. Greg Parham recorded 14 points and was 5 of 7 shooting (2 for 3 from distance).

Josh Corbin finished with 19 points and two steals for the Colonials (2-5). Michael Green III added 17 points and seven assists for Robert Morris. In addition, Kahliel Spear had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

District women Duquesne 77, Marshall 72:

Despite a late rally by Marshall, Duquesne grabbed a win on the road. Marshall outscored the Dukes, 27-17, in the final frame to close the gap and force Duquesne ( 5- 1) to make some clutch free throws to win. Junior forward Precious Johnson led Duquesne with 19 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Megan McConnell finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, six steals and zero turnovers. Sophomore guard Tess Myers had a season-high 18 points.

Maryland 87, Pitt 63:

Abby Meyers scored 12 of her 23 points in Maryland’s 36-point third quarter and the No. 14 Terrapins rolled to a win against Pittsburgh to finish the Ft. Myers TipOff.

Shyanne Sellers added 13 points for the Terrapins (6-2), who went 2-1 in the tournament. Maliyah Johnson had 15 points for the Panthers (5-2), who went 12 in the tournament.
