Dukes hold off UCSB for win

Grant gets 26 to top scorers

Dae Dae Grant scored 26 points and the Duquesne men held off a determined Cal Santa Barbara squad Tuesday night in the final minutes to get a 69- 61 victory, the Dukes’ fifth in a row at UPMC Rooney Fieldhouse to start the season. The victory also helped the Dukes equal their win total from a year ago (6-24).

The Dukes (6-1) took an 11-8 lead on Grant’s 3pointer eight minutes into the game and never relinquish­ed it, but the Gauchos (4--2) stayed in the game, never falling behind by more than their 13point deficit early in the second half.

Grant was 6 for 9 on 3point attempts as the Dukes made 42% of their shots from beyond the arc. Austin Rotroff led the Dukes with 8 rebounds.

Tevin Brewer added 13 for the Dukes who shot 49 percent and forced 17 Gauchos turnovers..

Duquesne will return to action Saturday at home against Ball State.

Clemson 101, Penn

State 94: Penn State rallied on the road from a seven-point deficit in the final 51 seconds of regulation to force overtime, but eventually lost in doubleover­time in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Penn State forced the first overtime when Andrew Funk banked in a 3- pointer. Camren Wynter had 26 points to lead the Nittany Lions (61). Clemson improved to 5-2 behind Hunter Tyson’s 26 points.

Houston 100, Norfolk

State 52: The No. 1 Cougars celebrated their ascending to the No. 1 ranking for the first time in 40 years with a blowout victory. Marcus Sasser scored 25 points to lead Houston (7-0). The Cougars won the game with a huge 3-point advantage, making 17 of 33 shots from beyond the arc while Norfolk State (5-3) was 1 for 18.

Marquette 96, Baylor

70: The sixth- ranked Bears got walloped on the visit to Marquette in the Big East-Big Ten Battle. The Golden Eagles (6-2) took control of the game with a 14-0 run in the first half and went into the break with a 51-25 lead. Olivier-Maxence Prosper had 24 points and 5 rebounds to lead Marquette. L.J. Cryer scored 19 points to lead Baylor (5-2).

Illinois 73, Syracuse 44: Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 17 points and Coleman Hawkins had a triple-double for No 16 Illinois.

Kentucky 60, Bellarmine 41: Antonio Reeves scored 18 points to lead the 19th-ranked Wildcats.

Maryland 79, Louisville 54: The 22nd-ranked Terrapins improved to 7-0 with a win against winless Louisville (0-7).

South Carolina 73, UCLA 64: Aliyah Boston, looking healthy as ever, had 18 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks as No. 1 South Carolina rallied from 10-points down to beat No. 15 UCLA.

Iowa State 93, SIUEdwards­ville 43: Lexi Donarski scored 22 to lead No. 8 Iowa State.
