Maryland hits winner, beats Irish

Robert Morris men dominate in league opener

Diamond Miller scored 31 points, including the gamewinner at the buzzer, to lead No. 20 Maryland to a 74-72 victory against host seventhran­ked Notre Dame on Thursday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Irish guard Sonia Cintron’s layup had tied the game with 15 seconds left off before Maryland held for the last shot. Miller hit a contested mid-range jumper just before time expired to give the Terrapins a victory against a top10 opponent. It was the 15th lead change of the game.

Miller also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with five assists. Shyanne Sellers added 17 points. Maryland (7-2) picked up its first win against Notre Dame (6-1) since 2007.

Cintron’s double- double led the Irish with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Notre Dame’s leading scorer Olivia Miles got off to a slow start due to foul trouble. She scored 12 of her 14 points in the final 15 minutes of the game to go along with seven assists and two steals.

Indiana 87, North Carolina 63: Mackenzie Holmes scored 25 points, Sydney Parrish added 24 and host No. 5 Indiana (8-0) hit 12 3-pointers to defeat No. 6 North Carolina (6-1) in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Virginia Tech 85, Nebraska 54: Georgia Amoore had 24 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for the first triple-double in Virginia Tech history as the host No. 9 Hokies (7-0) beat Nebraska in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Isabelle Bourne paced Nebraska (5-3) with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Utah 109, Mississipp­i Valley State 42: No. 16 Utah earned a road win at Mississipp­i Valley State (1-6) as part of the Pac- 12/ SWAC Legacy Series. Reigning Pac12 Player of the Week Alissa Pili led all scorers with 28 points for Utah (7-0).

Gonzaga 71, Stephen F. Austin 59: Kaylynne Truong had 21 points and seven assists, and No. 23 Gonzaga (71) beat host Stephen F. Austin (5-2).

Top 25 men

Texas 72, Creighton 67: No. 2 Texas (6-0) held off No. 7 Creighton (6-2) in the final minutes. Marcus Carr scored 19 points to lead the Longhorns in the Big East-Big 12 Battle.

Connecticu­t 74, Oklahoma State 64: Jordan Hawkins scored a career-high 26 points to lead unbeaten host No. 8 UConn (9-0) past Oklahoma State in the Big East- Big 12 Battle. Kalib Boone scored 15 points to lead the Cowboys (5-3).

District men

Robert Morris 80, Wright State 59: Robert Morris won they climbed within 60-59 with a 1:15 left in the game, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Ayanna Townsend led the Dukes with 21 points.

Notes

Pitt player William Jeffress underwent surgery on his left foot. Jeffress had been sidelined since early September when the injury was initially diagnosed. The Erie native was averaging 3.0 points and 2.9 rebounds per game in 47 career contests (20 starts). Jeffress, a forward, is expected to receive a medical redshirt and will have three seasons of eligibilit­y remaining.
