Rangers lure deGrom with $185 million deal for five years

The Texas Rangers struck de biggest blow on the free agent market, signing righthande­r Jacob deGrom to a five-year deal, the team announced Friday.

DeGrom opted out of a long-term deal with the New York Mets to test free agency and ended up cashing in for what will reportedly amount to $185 million over five years, according to ESPN. Those figures mean the deal carries an average annual value of $37 million, secondhigh­est ever awarded a major league player.

Only his former Mets teammate, Max Scherzer, has a deal worth more per year ($43.3 million).

• The Seattle Mariners acquired second baseman Kolten Wong from the Milwaukee Brewers in a trade for outfielder Jesse Winker and infielder Abraham Toro.

College football

Pine-Richland grad and Boston College quarterbac­k Phil Jurkovec has entered the draft portal, according to an ESPN. com report. Jurkovec has been the Eagles’ starting quarterbac­k the past three seasons and will have one year of eligibilit­y available.

• Notre Dame quarterbac­k Drew Pyne announced on social media that he is putting his name in the transfer portal. He took over as starter after Tyler Buchner’s season-ending shoulder injury in the season’s second game.

Pyne threw for 2,021 yards and 22 touchdowns, and could have as many as three years of eligibilit­y remaining.

• Former Texas and Houston head coach Tom Herman was hired as Florida Atlantic’s new coach.

Soccer

Portland Thorns coach Rhian Wilkinson resigned, only five weeks after she led the team to the National Women’s Soccer League championsh­ip. She said players had asked for her resignatio­n and she complied. Wilkinson was investigat­ed and cleared of wrongdoing by the NWSL and its players union after she selfreport­ed that she and a player had developed feelings for one another but had never acted upon them.”

• Bethel Park grad Lily Gaston had an assist for Johns Hopkins as it defeated Messiah, 4-1 in a semifinal in the NCAA Division III women’s tournament. In the other semifinal, South Fayette grad Helina VanBibber had a goal and Oakland Catholic grad Maggie Storti posted a shutout for Case Western Reserve in its 3-0 win against Virginia Wesleyan.
