Butler powers Beaver win

Bobcats outscore Norwin, 19-12, in 4th quarter

It appears the Beaver boys basketball team is for real.

Beaver (7-1), which hasn’t finished above .500 since the 2012-2013 season, used 18 points from Ty Butler and a big fourth quarter to derail Norwin, 60-52, Wednesday at the Peters Township/Upper St. Clair Tournament.

Norwin entered the contest undefeated at 6-0 and ranked No. 5 in WPIAL 6A by the Post-Gazette. Beaver, a 4A school, is not ranked, although that could change soon.

Butler scored half of his team-high 18 points at the foul line.

Adam Bilinsky once again led Norwin, scoring a gamehigh 26 points.

The Bobcats held a slim 4140 lead entering the fourth quarter, then outscored Norwin, 19-12, to put the game away.

Other games

• Upper St. Clair (5-4) found WPIAL competitio­n to its liking, turning back Peters Township, 68-52, at the Peters Township/ Upper St. Clair Tournament. The Panthers roared to a 31-16 halftime lead and were never threatened. Sophomore Julian Dahlem led USC with 20 points. Jack Dunbar had a game-high 21 for Peters.

• South Fayette improved to 6-2 with a hard-fought 66-61 win against Bethel Park (5-2) at the North Allegheny/Butler Holiday Bash. Elijah Hill had a game-high 33 points for South Fayette. Nick Brown netted 26 for Bethel.

• Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (7-1), which saw its state record 74-game win streak come to an end last week, bounced back with a 51-39 win against Mercyhurst Prep at the Shaler Tournament. OLSH, ranked No. 1 in 3A, was led by Rocco Spadafora’s 15 points. • Chartiers Valley improved

to 8-0 with a 67-47 victory against Grove City at the Hampton Tournament. Sophomore Jayden Davis paced the winning Colts with 30 points.

• Bishop Canevin, ranked No. 2 in 2A, improved to 7-0 with a 57-45 win against StoRox (2-4) at the Montour Tournament. Shea Champine led the winning Crusaders with 15 points.

• Hampton (7-2) beat North Hills (6-2) for the second time this season, 55-48, at the Hampton Tournament. The Talbots, ranked No. 4 in 4A, got 13 points and 6 rebounds from junior Liam Mignogna. North Hills, ranked No. 3 in 5A, was paced by Jayden Thomas’ 16 points. Hampton outscored the Indians in the fourth quarter, 14-9.

• New Castle (8-0), No. 1 ranked in 6A, beat Farrell, 5644, in the championsh­ip game of the Farrell Tournament. Issiah Boyce had a big game for the winners, scoring 26 points.

• Defending City League champion Allderdice (7-2) fell to United Faith Christian (N.C.), 75-62, at the Carolina Lowcountry Invitation­al in Charleston, S.C. The Dragons led at halftime, 30-29. Allderdice was paced by by Logan Golle’s 18 points.

Stars of the night

• Jaydis Kennedy notched 41 points, pacing Geibel Catholic (2-4) to an 86-60 victory against Ligonier Valley (1-9) at the Berlin Brothersva­lley Tournament.

• Vinnie Cugini tallied 43 points as Aquinas Academy (60) topped Trinity Christian, 8476, at the Aquinas Academy Tournament.

• Tasso Sfanos had seven 3- pointers and netted 33 points for Mars (5-1) in an 8467 loss at St. Edward (Ohio).

• Owen Norman scored 32 points, helping Fort Cherry (62) beat Western Beaver (4-4), 77-50, at the Avella Tournament.

• Greg Preisser had 27 points, including five 3-pointers, leading Laurel (3-3) past Eden Christian (5-2), 49-43, at the Laurel Tournament.
