Highlands picks up win

Vaught scores 23 as Our Lady of Sacred Heart boys lose second of its last three

Although most eyes were on Lincoln Park and Laurel Highlands at the Beaver County Dome, there was another Class 4A team not to be written off just yet playing in a matinee.

Highlands (7-0) had two players finish with double-doubles as Bradyn Foster scored a game-high 23 points and 14 rebounds, while Jimmy Kunst had 11 points and 11 boards to lead the Class 4A No. 3 Golden Rams to a 6043 victory against Pine-Richland (2-5). It was the Rams’ third consecutiv­e loss.

Highlands led 34-29 at the intermissi­on but held Pine-Richland to just 13 secondhalf points to pull away.

Other boys games

• Penn Hills knew it was in for a game when it faced off against Archbishop Wood and the two made it a classic. Daemar Kelly scored a gamehigh 25 for the Class 5A No. 1 Indians ( 3- 2), but the Vikings staved off a fourthquar­ter comeback and pulled out a 57-55 win at the Beaver County Dome. Jalil Bethea led three Archbishop Wood players in double-digits with 19.

• Allderdice (7-3) had a tough go of it at the Carolina Lowcountry Invitation­al in Charleston, S.C. The Dragons lost both games, including their last, a 53- 52 heartbreak­er against Auburndale (Fla.) in which they had three players in double-figures. Sam Kelly led Allderdice with 13, Ethan Anish had 12 and Major Rainey 11.

• Central Catholic also ventured out of state, heading to Baltimore for the Governors Challenge at Maryland-Eastern Shore. But despite 17 from Dante DePante, the Vikings couldn’t get past Mount St. Joseph (Md.) and dropped a 65-48 decision.

• Our Lady of the Sacred Heart went 74 games without a loss and now has dropped two of its last three. B.J. Vaught scored a game-high 23, but it wasn’t enough for the Class 3A No. 1 Chargers (7-2) as Shaler (8-2) got 18 from junior Brandon London in the Titans’ 54-53 win.

• For the first time this season, Steel Valley can say it’s on a winning streak. Makhai Valentine scored a game- high 37 and Cruce Brookins added 20 as the Class 3A No. 2 Ironmen (3-7) rolled over Knoch (2-8), 7350, at the Deer Lakes Tournament. Teegan Finucan and Zairan Finucan each scored 12 in the loss.

Top girls games

• Norwin loaded up its nonsection schedule with powerhouse­s and has barely flinched this season. This time around, the Knights (8-1) rebounded from their first loss of the season as sophomore center Lauren Palangio dominated inside and scored a game-high 19 and Kendall Berger chipped in 14 in a 6145 win against Class 4A No. 2 North Catholic.

• Indiana hadn’t really had a statement win this year, but it may have one now. Katie Kovalchick scored 18 points to lead the Little Indians as they held off Class 6A No. 4 Peters Township (8-2) and pulled out a 55-54 victory in the Latrobe Tournament. Gemma Walker led the Indians with 20.

Milestone

• South Fayette senior Maddie Webber, a Villanova recruit, scored 30 points, including the 1,000th of her career, to help the Lions to a 74- 61 victory against Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Md.) in the St. Elizabeth (Del.) Tournament.
