13-year-old boy killed in Clairton shooting
A 13-year-old boy faces homicide charges for allegedly shooting and killing another 13-year-old boy at a friend’s house Monday night in Clairton.
The shooting happened shortly before 9:20 p.m. at a home on Wilson Avenue, according to police. Chase Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.
One witness told police that they were in the third-floor bedroom of the home playing video games with classmates including Chase, LaQuan Rich- Cabbagestalk, and another person identified in court paperwork as Witness 2.
The first witness said they were playing video games while Chase and Rich-Cabbagestalk were behind them on the bed, according to the criminal complaint. The witness said they heard a gunshot and turned to see Rich-Cabbagestalk “with his hands on his head saying, ‘I shot him.’ ”
The second witness described a similar scenario, according to the complaint, indicating they’d been playing video games with the first witness when they heard a gunshot. The second witness said they heard a shot and turned to see Rich-Cabbagestalk standing next to the bed where Chase was with a gun in his hand.
The witness said Rich -Cabbagestalk said “I’m sorry,” and ran from the house, according to the complaint.
Police later found a Smith & Wesson 9mm when they searched the area Rich-Cabbagestalk ran toward when he left the house, detectives wrote. It had previously been reported stolen.
The boy is charged with homicide and possession of a firearm by a minor.
The District Attorney’s Office did not immediately indicate whether prosecutors will seek to have the case transferred to juvenile court. Pennsylvania law does not allow homicide charges to be filed directly to juvenile court.
