North Allegheny dominates Central Catholic in Class 6A

The world of WPIAL Class 6A boys basketball continued its topsy-turvy trend Tuesday night.

Central Catholic looked like it had maybe establishe­d itself as the No. 1 team after three wins last week against ranked teams, including two against teams ranked No. 1. Then North Allegheny came to Central Catholic’s gym Tuesday night and looked like one of the best teams in Class 6A.

Four North Allegheny players scored in double-figures and the Tigers defeated Central Catholic 62-46 in a Section 1 game. North Allegheny came in with a 4-7 overall record and a 1-3 mark in section. Central Catholic, the Post-Gazette’s No. 1 team, is now 7-6 and 3-2.

North Allegheny took control by outscoring the host Vikings 20-11 in the first quarter. Junior Joey Dopirak led North Allegheny with 15 points. Senior Dante DePante was Central Catholic’s only player in double-figures with 14.

Other top boys games

• Royce Parham, North Hills’ 6-foot-8 junior standout, had a monster game as North Hills (11-2, 5-0), No. 2 in Class 4A, won at Chartiers Valley 78-74 in Section 4.

Parham had a career-high 39 points, 18 rebounds, 6 blocked shots and 6 dunks. Senior guard Jayden Thomas also had a career-high with 24. Sophomore Jayden Davis had 24 for Chartiers Valley (12-3, 2-3).

• Peters Township (11-3, 41) moved into a three-way tie for first in Class 5A Section 1 when it won at Bethel Park 7568. Jack Dunbar led Peters Township with 26 points, including three 3- pointers. Peters Township, Bethel Park and Thomas Jefferson are all tied for first with 4-1 records.

• Mohawk (13-1, 5-1), having its best season in more than a decade, moved into a first-place tie in Class 3A Section 1 when it grabbed a 6749 win against Neshannock (9-4, 5-1). Jay Michael had five 3-pointers and 25 points for Mohawk.

• Michael Butler’s gamewinnin­g basket gave Deer Lakes (8-6, 5-1) a 53-51 Class 3A Section 3 victory against Shady Side Academy (9-4, 5-1), the No. 1-ranked 3A team. Eli Teslovich had 30 for Shady Side.

• Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (11-3, 5-1), ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, was upset by Keystone Oaks 62-54 in Section 2. Keystone Oaks (7-6, 42) had a 10-point halftime lead.

• Eden Christian (11-2, 5-0) won its sixth game in a row with a 64-50 victory against Propel Braddock Hills (6-9, 23). Ryan Merrick had 20 for Eden Christian.

• Andrew Maddalon made five 3-pointers and scored 24 points to lead North Catholic (9-5, 5-1) to a 66-57 victory against Beaver (11-2, 4-2) in Class 4A Section 2. The win gives North Catholic sole possession of second place in the section. Max Hurray had 18 points for North Catholic.

• Makhai Valentine scored 43 points and Steel Valley (68, 4-2) stayed in a secondplac­e tie in Class 3A Section 2 with a 77-63 victory against South Park (5-8, 2-4).

Top girls game

• McKeesport (12-2, 5-1), ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, lost to No. 3 Oakland Catholic 5951 in Section 3. Alexa Washington had three 3-pointers and 19 points for Oakland Catholic (12-2, 6-0).

Milestones

• Freedom’s Julia Mohrbacher scored 21 points and went over 1,000 career points in a 68-11 win vs. New Brighton.

• Tasso Sfanos scored 24 points for Mars and went over 1,000 for his career in a 6752 loss to Moon.
