Dugan campaign manager resigns after DUI arrest

- By Hallie Lauer

A leader of Matt Dugan’s campaign for Allegheny County district attorney has left the campaign after her arrest Sunday on charges of driving while intoxicated.

Nichole Remmert, of Moon, was pulled over by police shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday after multiple calls to 911 reported a vehicle driving recklessly and heading north in the southbound lanes on Route 65 in Avalon, according to court documents.

Ms. Remmert, 48, told an officer that she had been drinking before failing multiple field sobriety tests, police said.

The officer, who noted that Ms. Remmert had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, also conducted a breathalyzer test that came back positive for alcohol.

On Tuesday night, Ms. Remmert said on Twitter that she was leaving her job as Mr. Dugan’s campaign manager to “deal with a personal matter that arose this past weekend.”

“I am confident the campaign is in good hands,” she said.

Ms. Remmert is being charged with two counts of driving under the influence and multiple driving infractions. She did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Mr. Dugan’s campaign also didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Mr. Dugan, the county’s chief public defender, is mounting a progressive challenge to longtime incumbent DA Stephen A. Zappala

Jr. in the May 16 Democratic primary election.

If elected, Mr. Dugan has said he would focus on a “modern approach to policing” and implement diversion programs to keep some offenders out of prison.

The challenger beat out Mr. Zappala earlier this month for the Allegheny County Democratic Committee’s endorsement.
