Astros’ Altuve has broken right thumb
Houston Astros star Jose Altuve has a broken right thumb and needs surgery after getting hurt in Venezuela’s 9-7 quarterfinal loss to the United States at the World Baseball Classic. The second baseman fell to the field after he was struck by the 95.9 mph sinker from Colorado reliever Daniel Bard in the fifth inning Saturday night.
Other baseball
Trea Turner homered twice to give him a tournament-leading four, and the defending champion United States romped over Cuba, 14-,2 on Sunday night in Miami to reach its second straight World Baseball Classic final.
Paul Goldschmidt and Cedric Mullins also homered for the Americans, who scored in seven of eight innings. Turner and Goldschmidt had four RBIs each. The U.S. plays Japan or Mexico in Tuesday night’s championship, trying to join the Samurai Warriors as the only nations to win the title twice.
Pro football
The rebuilding of the Steelers offensive line continued with another free agent signing late Saturday night. Former Eagles offensive lineman Isaac Seumalo has agreed to terms on a three-year contract, sources told the Post-Gazette.
Seumalo, who was drafted in the third round of the 2016 draft, started 60 games for the Eagles in the past seven seasons, including 17 last season for the NFC champions. Seumalo played the right and left side on the Eagles offensive line. He played right guard last season.
• The Carolina Panthers added yet another experienced veteran to their offense, agreeing to terms with free agent receiver Adam Thielen from the Minnesota Vikings.
• The Dallas Cowboys have acquired receiver Brandin Cooks in a trade with the Houston Texans. Houston gets a fifth-round pick this year and a 2024 sixth-rounder.
Golf
Taylor Moore shot a 67 to win the Valspar Championship in Palm Peach Harbor, Fla. He made key birdies on the 15th and 16th holes at Innisbrook. And he avoided the mistakes that cost Adam Schenk and Jordan Spieth. The victory sends the 29-year-old Moore to the Masters with his first PGA Tour victory.
• Danny Lee birdied his final two holes for a 2-underpar 69 and then won LIV Golf Tucson on the second hole of a four-man playoff in Marana, Ariz., by making a 25-foot birdie putt from off the 18th green for his first win in nearly eight years. Lee finished at 9-under 275 and got into the playoff with Carlos Ortiz (65), Brendan Steele (70) and Louis Oosthuizen (70). Oosthuizen bogeyed the par-5 17th to fall one behind, only to birdie the 18th to join the playoff.
• Ernie Els kept making birdies no matter how he gripped the putter, and it carried him to a 6-under 65 to win the Hoag Classic in Newport Beach, Calif., and denied Bernhard Langer a chance at setting the career victory mark on the PGA Tour Champions.
Auto racing
Joey Logano dominated early and then passed Brad Keselowski on the final lap Sunday to win NASCAR’s race at Atlanta. Logano won the pole but Keselowski looked like the Ford driver to beat late in the race. Keselowski had help from Corey LaJoie but Logano got a push from Christopher Bell that proved decisive on the final lap. Logano’s win ended a streak of four consecutive victories by Chevrolet to open the NASCAR Cup season, including backto-back wins by Hendrick’s William Byron.
• Sergio Perez won the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and Max Verstappen drove from 15th to second to give Red Bull a 1-2 finish in Jeddah Saudi Arabia in the Formula One event.
Tennis
Elena Rybakina defeated Aryna Sabalenka, 7-6 (11), 64, to win the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif.
• Carlos Alcaraz defeated Daniil Medvedev, 6-3, 6-2, to win the BNP Paribas Open title and regain the world’s No. 1 ranking. The 19-yearold Spaniard will move from second to first in the
ATP Tour rankings on Monday, displacing Novak Djokovic.
College hockey
Former Shady Side Academy and Wisconsin senior defender Chayla Edwards helped Wisconsin women’s hockey bring home the national title. Kirsten Simms scored a goal and Cami Kronish had 31 saves in Duluth, Minn., to help the Badgers beat topseeded and defending NCAA champ Ohio State, 10, earning the Badgers their record seventh national title. Edwards finished with two shots in the win for Wisconsin (29-10-2) and came up a with a blocked shot as well against Ohio State (33-6-2).
• Penn State men’s hockey (21-15-1) earned atlarge bid and a No. 2 seed in the Allentown Regional and will face Michigan Tech at 5 p.m. Friday in PPL Center in Allentown, Pa., on ESPNU.
Winter sports
Mikaela Shiffrin won her 21st career giant slalom at the World Cup Finals as the American standout ended the season with yet another record in Soldeu, Andorra. The victory moved Shiffrin past Vreni Schneider after matching the Swiss skier’s mark of 20 World Cup GS victories last week. The American has won seven of the last eight events and took the GS world title last month. Shiffrin extended the all-time record for most career wins to 88.
