Road closures, PRT detours announced for Great Race

- By Jacob Comer

City officials have announced multiple road closures and public transportation detours during the annual Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race on Sunday.

Road closures will start in Downtown at 5:30 a.m. and roads along the course will close at different times. All roads are expected to reopen by 11 a.m.

The annual foot race will impact four zones in Squirrel Hill, Oakland, Uptown and Downtown.

• Zone A: Beechwood Boulevard to Forbes Avenue & Morewood Avenue, closing from 8:30 a.m. - 10 a.m.

• Zone B: Forbes & Morewood Avenue to Fifth Avenue & Bigelow Boulevard, closing from 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

• Zone C: Fifth Avenue at Bigelow Boulevard to Fifth Avenue at Robinson Street ramp to Boulevard of the Allies, closing from 6:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.

• Zone D: Fifth Avenue at Robinson Street ramp to Boulevard of the Allies to Commonwealth Place & Liberty Avenue, closing from 6:30 a.m. - 11 a.m.

A map of the race route and road closures is available online.

The city says anyone who regularly parks in the zones and needs to leave during the closure is encouraged to park elsewhere.

As well as road closures, multiple bus routes will be detoured during the race.

Pittsburgh Regional

Transit announced nearly 40 bus routes will be impacted. Most detours will begin by the start of service on Sunday, with all detours beginning by 7 a.m.

The detours will end by roughly 1 p.m., PRT says. Riders should expect additional travel time.

In addition to the detours, PRT will have two special bus routes for the 5K and 10K running between Oakland and Downtown, and Squirrel Hill and Downtown via the East Busway.

The 5K bus service will start at 6 a.m. and travels from Gateway Station at Stanwix Street in Downtown, to Bigelow Boulevard at Fifth Avenue in Oakland.

The 10K bus service will start at 7 a.m. and travels from Gateway Station at Stanwix Street in Downtown, to Forbes Avenue at Beechwood Boulevard in Squirrel Hill.

Both of the special bus routes will be available to those participating in the race, and anyone else traveling from Downtown and Oakland or Downtown and Squirrel Hill.

Other races are taking place Sunday morning, including the Diaper Dash, Tot Trot, One Mile Family Fun Run, 5K and 10K.

The city said roughly 10,000 people are expected to participate in this year’s races.

A portion of money raised from the race registrations is donated to the Richard S. Caliguiri Amyloidosis Fund, which is held by the Pittsburgh Foundation and supports medical research.
