North Catholic scores win against Avonworth

The first match between Avonworth and North Catholic girls soccer was decided in overtime. Monday’s rematch was also decided by one goal, but no overtime was needed.

North Catholic ( 7- 2), ranked No. 3 in WPIAL Class 3A, avenged its first half loss to top-ranked Avonworth (8-12) with a 1-0 victory at J.C. Stone Field in North Park.

The two teams are now tied for first place in Section 1 as both teams have a 6-1 record.

“It was a total team effort,” North Catholic coach D. J. Sharpless said. “Our backline and midfielder­s were unbelievab­le. We out possessed them and out played them at times. And we came up with the clutch goal.”

Sophomore Simone Sharpless, D.J.’s daughter, scored the only goal with 7:52 left in the first half on a pass from sophomore Rylee Roccon. Rylee Kumer recorded 8 saves for the Trojans to pick up the shutout.

• Briana Ross scored two goals in the first half as Class 1A No. 4 Springdale (7-1) defeated top ranked Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (4-3) in a non

-section game played at Youthtowne Field in Clinton. It was the second loss in four days for the Chargers. Molly Hurley and Brooke Taliani recorded assists for the Dynamos, while Baileigh Haas was credited with a clean sheet. Ross now has 19 goals for the season.

• Mount Pleasant (7-2), ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, recorded its seventh consecutiv­e shutout with a 1-0 victory against visiting South Park (73) in a non-section game. Riley Gesinski scored the winning goal on an assist from Morgan Gesinski, and Lauren

Rummel picked up the shutout in goal.

• Plum, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, recorded its fifth consecutiv­e shutout with a 50 win against Gateway (2-5-1, 2-5) in Section 3. Gianna Revetta, Rayla Smith, Mia Nardo, Emily Grubich, and

Olivia Bigger scored goals for the Mustangs (8-0-1, 7-0). The Mustangs used three goalkeeper­s in the victory.

• Regan Reilly scored three goals and assisted on two others, while Maddy Petruzzi had two goals and one assist, as 3A No. 3 Latrobe (8-1, 6-1) posted a 9-0 blanking of visiting Greensburg Salem (2-8-1, 1-6) in Section 3. Also scoring for Latrobe were: Ava Yurko, Robin Reilly, Annalyse Bauer, and Emerson Shine.

• Sydney Chontos recorded a hat trick to lead Beaver (4-3-1, 2-3-1) to a 6-0 win against host Hopewell (08, 0-6) in Class 2A Section 1. Marina Hahn, Carly Hauser, and Lilia Battalini also scored for the Bobcats. Elizabeth Turyan recorded the shutout with two saves.

• Montour (7-0-3), ranked No. 4 in Class 3A, tied for the third time this season, this time in a non-section match at Franklin Regional. Allyssa Velasquez scored the only goal for Franklin Regional (63-1) in a 1-1 tie.

• Emilie Oslosky and Olivia Weishaar scored in the first half, while Chloe Walton and Eilish Connolly scored in the second half, as Penn-Trafford (6-3, 3-3) posted a 4-0 road victory against Penn Hills (2-6, 0-6) in Class 3A Section 3.

Rease Solomon picked up the shutout for the Warriors.

• Ella Miller tallied three goals and one assist at Waynesburg (7-2, 5-2) posted a 5-1 victory against visiting Monessen (3-6-1, 1-5-1) in Class 1A Section 2. Rylei Rastoka and Kaley Rohanna also scored for the Raiders.

• Makiah Buchak, Grace Nesko, and Miley Kariotis scored goals as Burrell (9-2, 5-1) posted a 3-0 shutout of Knoch (5-4-2, 3-2-1) in Class 2A Section 2. Tessa Mathabel had two assists for the Buccaneers and Dana Barczykows­ki picked up the shutout in goal.

• Angelina McGrath recorded a hat trick and Sydney Towers tallied two goals to lead Seton LaSalle (4-4, 23) to an 8- 0 road victory against Jeannette (0-7-1, 0-6) in Class 1A Section 1. Catie Kozel, Brynlee Robinson, and Sophia Samson also scored for the Rebels, while Maurah Hoyt recorded a clean sheet.

• Aly Simon tallied four goals and Becca Simon scored two more as Keystone Oaks (7-4) posted a 7-0 victory against visiting Yough (38) in a non-section game. Jenna Janesko was in goal for the clean sheet. It’s the fourth shutout of the season for the Golden Eagles.
