PRT projects likely to result in Downtown delays this weekend

- By Megan Tomasic

Getting around Downtown Pittsburgh could prove difficult this weekend as several transportation projects get underway.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit on Wednesday announced that the Monongahela Incline will remain closed through next week as crews work to repair a damaged door on the west car. Two T stations will also close as crews carry out a multi-million dollar construction project.

The work, according to a PRT news release, is expected to cause “significant bus and light-rail services disruptions this weekend.”

According to PRT spokesman Andrew Carr, the Monongahela Incline door was damaged when equipment used by crews doing maintenance along the incline trackway caused the car door to jam. The car then moved, pulling the door off.

Repairs are expected to take several days. The incline could reopen Tuesday.

The Wood Station has been closed since Oct. 9 as part of a $13.5 million project to replace nine escalators at three Downtown T stations. The station is expected to reopen Monday.

Until then, the light rail is skipping the Wood Street stop.

In addition to the Wood Street Station, inbound light rail service will end at Penn Station from 8 p.m. Friday through Monday as crews resume repair work to concrete track supports inside the Central Business District rail tunnels.

During the closure, riders traveling to the Gateway, North Side and Allegheny stations should exit the T at Penn Station and board a free shuttle bus to Gateway Station, where they can then ride the T to the North Side and Allegheny station.

Riders traveling from the North Shore toward Downtown can use the T up to Gateway Station. Those continuing to the South Hills should exit the rail car at Gateway and board a shuttle bus that will drop riders off at Penn Station where they can board cars going to the South Hills.

Riders should plan for an additional 20 minutes of travel during construction.

The Mount Washington Transit Tunnel will also be closed to buses and rail cars from Saturday through Monday. A rail shuttle will operate between the inbound platform of Station Square and Penn Station.
