Michigan suspends staffer after NCAA launches investigat­ion

No. 2 Michigan has suspended a low-level football program employee a day after disclosing that it is under NCAA investigat­ion for allegedly stealing the play-calling signals used by its opponents. Athletic director Warde Manuel issued a onesentenc­e statement saying that Connor Stalions had been suspended with pay pending the conclusion of the NCAA investigat­ion. Stalions had not been previously identified by the school but was named in an ESPN report alleging he is a key figure in the probe.

Basketball

The mother of a woman killed near the University of Alabama in January has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in federal court against current Charlotte Hornets rookie Brandon Miller and two other men. Decarla Raietta Heard filed the suit in U.S. District Court in Alabama against Miller, former Crimson Tide player Darius Miles and another man, Michael Davis. Both Miles and Davis are charged with capital murder while Miller, the No. 2 NBA draft pick, was never charged with a crime.

• Andre Iguodala, a fourtime champion with the Golden State Warriors during a 19-year NBA career, is retiring at age 39. Iguodala, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2004 NBA draft out of Arizona, played in 1,231 games. He spent eight seasons with the Philadelph­ia 76ers, one in Denver, six with Golden State, two in Miami and the last two back with the Warriors. He was part of NBA champions in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022 and the MVP of the Finals in 2015.

• Duke and men’s basketball coach Jon Scheyer have agreed on a new contract through the 2028-29 season. Although the new deal isn’t expected to be announced until this weekend, university sources confirmed the new deal to the News and Observer on Friday night. The 36-year-old Scheyer led Duke to a 27-9 record, including an ACC championsh­ip, during his first season as head coach.

Pro football

The NFL has fined Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams $50,000 for his “directed verbal remarks” toward a concussion doctor during the team’s Week 6 game against Cincinnati.

• Cleveland Browns quarterbac­k Deshaun Watson is expected to start Sunday at Indianapol­is after missing two games with a right shoulder injury. Watson last played on Sept. 24, when he bruised his rotator cuff .

Soccer

Christine Sinclair announced her decision to retire on Instagram in a video that showed a pair of cleats hanging in the breeze on the crossbar of a goal. Sinclair, who played on the Canadian national team, has scored 190 internatio­nal goals, most among both men and women, since she made her national team debut in 2000. She is among just five players to appear in six Women’s World Cups.

• Former U.S. women’s coach Vlatko Andonovski is the new coach of the Kansas City Current of the National Women’s Soccer League, a person with knowledge of the move told The Associated Press.

Golf

Defending champion Adrián Otaegui was in a three-way tie for the halfway lead at the Andalucia Masters in Spain after shooting 3-under 69 in the second round. The Spaniard is level with Louis de Jager of South Africa (67) and Jeong weon Ko of France (68) at 9-under 135 going into the weekend.

• Beau Hossler shot a 5-under 65 to grab a one-shot lead after the second round of the Zozo Championsh­ip in Japan, beating wind gusts that reached 37 mph and drying conditions at the Narashino Country Club on the outskirts of Tokyo.

• Minjee Lee overcame swirling winds to shoot a 3under 69 and take a twostroke lead after two rounds of the LPGA South Korea tournament in Seoul.

Tennis

Ben Shelton reached his second career tour semifinal by beating 12th-ranked Tommy Paul, 7-6 (4), 6-3, at the Japan Open in Tokyo. Shelton will play American qualifier Marcos Giron in Saturday’s semifinals after the world No. 79 continued his impressive week with a 6-1, 6-4 win against 17thranked Felix Auger-Aliassime.
