Bayne delivers upset for Mars

No. 11 seed Franklin Regional gets big upset vs. No. 6 seed Panthers

Joey Bayne scored two goals to lead Franklin Regional to a 4-0 upset of Mars in the opening round of the WPIAL Class 3A boys soccer playoffs on Saturday at Mars Athletic Complex.

Franklin Regional (11-7) is seeded No. 11 in the 16team bracket, while Mars (114-1) was the No. 6 seed.

Lorenzo Aguilera opened the scoring for the Panthers in the ninth minute. Bayne scored his goals in the 26th and 67th minute. Jovan Sankoorika­l capped the scoring with three minutes left in the match.

More Class 3A:

Indiana 1, Bethel Park 0: The Little Indians (6-10-1), seeded No. 13, pull a huge upset in defeating the No. 4 seeded Black Hawks (15-2-1) at Bethel Park. Neither team scored in regulation nor in two 10-minute overtime periods. Indiana registered the victory after outscoring the Black Hawks 4-1 in a shootout.

Thomas Jefferson 1, North Catholic 0: Ray Schrello scored the golden goal with four minutes left in the first overtime to lift the No. 7 seeded Jaguars (15-2-1) past the visiting Trojans (9-8). Robbie Shoemaker picked up an assist on the play and Sam Wessel recorded the shutout.

Plum 5, Chartiers Valley 1: Brady French scored two goals, and Travis Kodman, Eli Wastchak and Tristan Ralph chipped in one each, as the top-seeded Mustangs (18-1) dominated the visiting Colts (7-10).

Hampton 1, Trinity 0: Coleman

Docherty scored the golden goal with three minutes left in the first overtime as the No. 2 seeded Talbots (15-2-1) narrowly avoid an upset by the visiting Hillers (106-1).

South Fayette 4, Latrobe 0: Michael Plasko scored four goals, including three in the first half, to lead the Lions (11-4-3) against the visiting Wildcats (13-4). Dylan Janoski recorded the clean sheet.

Montour 5, Gateway 0: Andrew Prunier scored three goals and assisted on another to lead the No. 5 seeded Spartans (14-4) to a convincing victory against the visiting Gators (8-6-2). Parker Brennan added a goal and assisted on two others, while Anthony Orlandini scored the other goal.

Moon 4, Ringgold 0: Davi Jansson scored twice as the

No. 3 seeded Tigers (15-3-1) blanked the visiting Rams (11-6-1). The Tigers led 3-0 at halftime. Zach Shutak recorded the clean sheet in goal.

Class 1A

Burrell 5, Greensburg C.C. 1: Hadyn Herbulock and Cam Wagner each scored twice to lead the No. 3 seeded Buccaneers (13-3) to a win against the visiting Centurions (7-11). Billy Kowalkowsk­i scored the other goal for Burrell. The Centurions’ goal was scored by Grant Brewer.

Trinity Christian 1, Serra Catholic 0: The Falcons (105), seeded No. 11, pull the upset against No. 6 seed Serra Catholic (12-5) in a game at Bethel Park. Sam Boyer scored the only goal midway through the first half.

Sewickley Academy 2, Bishop Canevin 1: Chase D’Antonio scored the game winner with four minutes left as the No. 2 seeded Panthers (13-2-1) advanced with a narrow victory against the visiting Crusaders ( 5- 11). Jake Donesec also scored for Sewickley Academy.

Eden Christian 2, Winchester Thurston 1: Grayson Reichart scored twice for the Warriors (13-3-2), including the game winner with 30 seconds left, thus ending Winchester Thurston’s hopes of winning a third consecutiv­e title. The Bears finished with a 10-4-2 record.

Charleroi 1, Beaver C.C. 0: The top-seeded Cougars (170) remain unbeaten with a narrow victory against the visiting Eagles (6-9-1). Dylan Klinger scored the lone goal and Nathan Mazon recorded the shutout. It was Klinger’s 18th goal of the season.

Seton LaSalle 6, BethCenter 0: Jack Billick scored twice to increase his season total to 35 goals, as the No. 4 seeded Rebels (14-2-1) blanked the Bulldogs (11-8) in a game at Thomas Jefferson. Nick Cherry registered the clean sheet for the Rebels.

Bentworth 2, O.L. Sacred Heart 1: John Scott scored the golden goal as the Bearcats (15-2) narrowly defeated the Chargers (10-6-2) in a game at South Fayette. Andrew Vipperman also scored for the Bearcats.

Springdale 3, Carlynton 1: The No. 5 seeded Dynamos (14-3) moved on to the quarterfin­als with a win against the the Cougars (10-7-1) in a game at Plum. Billy Lawrence scored twice for Springdale.
