Duquesne lets lead slip away

Dukes fall to Santa Clara, 81-73

The Duquesne men’s team let a lead slip away in the final minutes Saturday and lost 8173 to Santa Clara at Las Vegas.

The Dukes (8-3) were up 6966 with 3:38 to play but were outscored 15-4 down the stretch to end up on the losing end and spoil Dae Dae Grant’s 32-point outing.

Carlos Marshall had teambests of 19 points, six rebounds and two assists for the Broncos (9-5).

Other district men West Virginia 91, Toledo 81:

The Mountainee­rs raced to an 18-point lead in the first half, then held off the Rockets’ second-half rally. Raequan Battle scored 29 points to lead WVU (5-7.

Top 25 men

FAU 96, Arizona 95 (2 OT): Johnell Davis scored 25 points and had 9 rebounds to lead the 14th-ranked Owls (10-2) past the No. 4 Wildcats (9-2) in Las Vegas.

Connecticu­t 69, St. John’s 65: In a matchup of longtime Big East rivals, the fifth-ranked Huskies (10-2, 1-1) escaped with a win against the Red Storm (8-4, 1-1) in a game that saw neither team lead by more than eight points.

Memphis 77, Vanderbilt 75: The 23rd-ranked Tigers (10-2)

won with free throws in the final minute. David Jones scored 28 points for Memphis.

Mississipp­i 89, Southern Mississipp­i72: Matthew Murrell had a season-high 26 points, Jaylen Murray scored 21 and the No. 25 Rebels (12-0) stretched one of the nation’s longest winning streaks for a Mississipp­i team ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since 2019.

Freshman Jeremy Fears, a point guard at Michigan State, was shot in the leg sometime late Friday or early Saturday near Joilet, Ill.
