Highlights from major construction projects around Pittsburgh and surrounding areas this week
1. Clairton and Miller roads and Route 51/Jefferson Hills:
Lane restrictions throughout the area for work related to the ongoing construction of the Mon/Fayette Expressway. Some work will continue into 2026. Also, Coal Valley Road is closed until April, necessitating a 4mile detour using Routes 885 and 837 through Jefferson Hills and Clairton.
2. North Avenue Bridge at Brighton Road/Pittsburgh:
Closed for replacement.
3. Gill Hall Road/Jefferson Hills:
Lane restrictions between Bedell Road and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission driveway, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays through late February for sewer installation.
4. Charles Anderson Memorial Bridge/Pittsburgh:
Bridge that carries the Boulevard of the Allies over a ravine in Oakland closed as a result of problems found during an inspection.
5. Roberto Clemente (Sixth Street) Bridge/Pittsburgh:
Closed for rehabilitation.
6. Smithfield Street Bridge/Pittsburgh:
One side closed for preservation, but bidirectional traffic maintained.
7. Armstrong Tunnel/ Pittsburgh:
Closed inbound for rehabilitation. Additionally, the right lane for inbound traffic on Second Avenue closed at the intersection with the tunnel. Inbound tunnel expected to reopen during winter 2024, when the outbound tunnel and adjacent sidewalk will be closed.
8. Boyce Road/South Fayette:
Slide remediation work begins Tuesday between Hunting Ridge and Mayview roads. Traffic to be controlled by temporary signals through mid-January.
9. Route 910/Richland, Marshall, Pine:
Single-lane alternating traffic between Hardt Road and Mingo Road through late 2023 for reconstruction; daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and overnights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
10. Chestnut Street/ Pittsburgh:
Reconstruction between Spring Garden Avenue and Phineas Street expected to end Jan. 12. Second phase then will concentrate on Tripoli/Zona Street to Phineas Street.
11. Greentree Road, Cochran Road/Scott, Mt. Lebanon:
Lane restrictions for paving: Cochran Road between Beverly Road and Greentree Road weeknights from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. through late 2023; Greentree Road between Cochran Road and Washington Pike weeknights from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. through late 2023.
12. Sixth Avenue/Pittsburgh:
Pittsburgh Regional Transit contractors have moved to Sixth Avenue between Grant Street and Ross Street for the ongoing construction of the University Line. Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction. Bus detours will remain the same. Pedestrian access will be maintained on both sides of the street. The work will continue around the clock until the end of December.
13. Glass Run and Mifflin roads/Pittsburgh:
Closure of the ramp that carries traffic from northbound Route 837 to southbound Route 885 will remain in place through mid-September. A single lane of traffic will be maintained on the ramp as crews build a pedestrian walkway and ramp.
14. Baptist Road/Whitehall:
Single-lane alternating traffic between Hamilton Road and Weyman Road, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. through late December, for waterline work.
15. Washington Boulevard/ Street/Port Vue, McKeesport:
Traffic restrictions between Lysle Boulevard and Bellaire Drive, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through late December, for pipeline work.
16. Butler Street/Pittsburgh:
Lane restrictions between 34th Street and 39th Street, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through February for gas pipeline work.
17. Parkway East (I-376) Pittsburgh:
Ramp that carries traffic from eastbound Parkway East to Oakland/ Forbes Avenue (Exit 72A) closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly through late December for concrete milling and deck overlay work.
18.ParkwayWest/various locations:
Lane and shoulder restrictions in each direction between the Moon/Business Loop 376 (Exit 57) interchange and the Beaver/Midland exit (Exit 38) intersection, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays through late December for constructing message signs.
19. Thompson Road/ Fawn:
Closed between Hemphill Road and Sportsman Club Road for replacement of Bull Creek Bridge No. 8. Work to last until June.
20. Route 50 (Washington Pike/Collier):
Lane restrictions in both directions for utility relocation work between the I-79 interchange and Landgraff Avenue. Work to continue as needed through late January. One lane of traffic in each direction open at all times.
21. Neville Island Bridge/ Neville:
Closure of ramp that carries traffic from Grand Avenue to northbound I-79 has been extended through early January. All ramp traffic detoured.
22. Freeport Road/Aspinwall, O’Hara:
Lane restrictions between 23rd Street in Aspinwall and Fox Chapel Road in O’Hara, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays through early April for signal work, miscellaneous construction.
