If 2022 was a roller coaster ride for home buyers and sellers, 2023 was like being stuck in traffic on the Parkway.

The highest interest rates in 20 years put the chill on home sales and for some, the dream of buying a home moved further out of reach with every rate increase. And for those trying to sell their homes, sometimes it meant a longer time on the market or possibly a price reduction.

Here’s a look back at 10 properties in Pittsburgh featured in Buying Here in 2023.

North Side

Gayle and David Thomas loved the home they purchased in 2019 in Washington’s Landing on the North Side. Then, with retirement looming, their two children moving out west and plans to head out west themselves to do some skiing, the couple listed their three-bedroom, 2½-bath townhouse at 10 Waterside Place for sale for $599,999 in November. Now the house is under contract, and it looks like they’ll be able to hit the slopes soon.

Troy Hill residents Dawn Hartman and her husband, Joe Kennedy, wanted to create a space for an artist to live and work near their North Side home. But when their main source of funding fell through, they put the project house at 1503 Gardner St. on the market for $275,000 and in mid-March, the house sold for their asking price.

Shadyside

The elegant three-story home at 5935 Fifth Ave. in Shadyside is known as the storybook house for a reason. Over the years, author Elizabeth Rodenz and her husband, David Baker, have opened their home to writers, The 95-year-old house was a gathering place for storytellers, according to Rodenz, whose book “Josephine: A Woman of Indomitable Spirit” was mostly written there.

But the time has come for life changes, downsizing from the fourbedroom, 3 ½-bath house to a new adventure in western Mexico. The property was featured in March with a price of $1.35 million. It’s still on the market and listed with Aaron Garland of RE/MAX Select Realty for $1.275 million.

South Side

Something Pittsburgh has aplenty is churches and over the years, many were converted from a house of worship to a residential home like the Angel’s Arms on the South Side Slopes.

Mara Tripoli listed her two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo, 1 Pius St., Suite B8, with 1,437 square feet of living space over two floors for $379,900. Now, her spacious loft
