Buying a house sight unseen may sound crazy. For Victoria Klimt, the two-bedroom, 1½-bath home at 328 Orchard Place in Knoxville was an adventure, one on a long list for a woman who immigrated from Russia 25 years ago.
With a master’s degree in art history with a concentration in theater arts and design, she created a charming home in what was once a rundown house headed in the wrong direction. Two years of hard workpaid off when the house priced at $162,000 sold for over the asking price, $171,000, in early June.
Mount Washington
Transforming the worn-out twobedroom, one-bath house on Mount Washington wasn’t a smooth ride for Avi Harow and Oren Jackson, partners in the development firm AOAPortfolio Management.
First, their contractor ran off with their money, then the pandemic slowed down the supply chain. And working in Pittsburgh while living in Israel made for a very long commute. Still on the market for $300,000 with Janus Realty Advisors, the once forlorn house at 11 E. Sycamore St. is a standout in bright blue with white trim and loads of updates inside.
Highland Park
When Gian Romagnoli and his wife, Megan Herwig were house shopping, they started in Lawrenceville. Then a Highland Park Craftsman built in 1910 caught their eyeand their hearts. And while they loved the house, a growing family meantit was time to upsize.
The two-bedroom, one-bath home at 924 Portland St. was listed at $275,000, in March, and sold for just under that, $272,000, in April.
Strip District
For Chelsea Holmes, purchasing a condo in the Strip District was a lifelong dream come true. Sadly, the dream of living there didn’t last long as a few months after moving in, she got a job offer she couldn’t refuse.
Her one-bedroom, one-bath unit at Forte Pittsburgh was featured in April for $448,000. After one summer in her new home, it sold in early September for $435,000.
North Side
Across town and one river in Brighton Heights, Hannah and Matthew Gregory faced the same predicament: new jobs out of state meant selling their family home at 4000 Oswald St.
The 1910 Foursquare home with four bedrooms, two full bathrooms and loads of original details is right across the street from Marmaduke Playground. Talk about an excellent location for a growing family. The house sold for its listing price of $230,000 at the end of October.
Uptown
After developing properties in several of Pittsburgh’s up and coming neighborhoods, New Yorkbased Stone Village Property Managementset their sights on Uptown.
The three-story building at 2022 Forbes Ave. has had a complete overhaul and features five bedrooms, six full bathrooms and is right on the path of the Bus Rapid Transit line that will connect Downtown and Oakland. Listed at $529,000 in April, it’s still on the market with RE/MAX Home Center with a new price of $490,000.
