Sheriff: Men who stole ATM arrested on multiple warrants

-

Two men suspected of stealing an ATM from a business in Downtown Pittsburgh have been arrested, the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

The ATM was rolled out of the Standard Market and Pint House in the 900 block of Penn Avenueon Christmas Eve.

The sheriff’s office, in a news release, said employees of the business forgot to lock the door before it closed at noon Dec. 24. Pittsburgh police viewed surveillance video from the business and saw a man walk into the building a few minutes after noon, wander around for about 20 minutesand leave after tampering withthe back door.

Just after 10:15 p.m., surveillance footage showed two men enter the rear door, load the ATM onto a dolly and wheel it into a pickup truck. The business owner told investigators that the ATM was worth $3,000 and had roughly $2,000 in it.

City police then watched surveillance footage from a nearby hotel and saw the same men stealing the dolly. The sheriff’s office said that although neither suspect was an employee of the hotel, they had the keyless entry code for a rear door.

According to the sheriff’s office, 59-year-old Raymond Fields III, of Sheraden, was chargedThursday with theft.

The news release said license plate recognition cameras determined that the truck belonged to Fields’ girlfriend. Sheriff’s detectives spotted the vehicle and the woman Thursday evening on South 18th Street on the South Side.

The detectives watched her walk into a home and could hear her talking to a man inside, the news release said. The woman opened the door for the detectives and allegedly told them Fields was not there. Detectives searched the home, found a crawl space leading to a structure next door, and found Fields inside thatbuilding, the news release said.

Fields was being held in the Allegheny County Jail on charges of burglary and theft. He also faces two bench warrants charging him with failing to appear at preliminary hearings on unrelated charges, the sheriff’s office said.

The second suspect, identified as 66-year-old Dominic Troiani, of McKees Rocks, was arrested Friday. The sheriff’s office said detectives found Troiani at a gas station onEast Carson Street.

As they tried to arrest him, the sheriff’s office said, Troiani tried to move his vehicle and narrowly missed a detective. More units arrived and Troiani was arrested without further incident and takento the county jail.

He faces charges related to the ATM theft in addition to four bench warrants for unrelatedtheft and burglary.
