Indiana grad honored
The Atlantic 10 Conference announced their weekly women’s basketball awards and recognized University of Dayton freshman Eve Fiala as the A-10 Rookie of the Week earlier this month.
Fiala had a breakout week in her debut season, averaging team highs of 13.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in Dayton’s two contests earlier this month. The freshmen center scored a career-high 15 points and grabbed 10 boards for her first career doubledouble before adding 12 points and five rebounds in the overtime win at La Salle. Fiala shot 71.4 percent overall last week while chipping in two assists, a steal and a block.
This is the first accolade for the Indiana grad and first for the Flyers this season.
Avella grad earns league honors following championships
Avella grad and Tennessee-Martin junior Alayna Walther produced a team-high score of 588 points (97-99-97-98-98-99) in the air rifle at the Ohio Valley Conference championships earlier this month.
She was named to the smallbore first team and air rifle second team for her fifth and sixth career All-OVC medals.
Baldwin grad hauls in Horizon League tennis honors
Baldwin grad Bethany Yauch was honored by the Horizon League earlier this month for the Cleveland State women’s tennis team.
Yauch and Sima Heren earned Doubles Team of the Week honors. This marks the first weekly accolades for the team this season.
On the doubles court, Heren and Yauch went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles, helping the Vikings clinch the doubles point against Ball State and Dayton.
The duo picked up matching 6-4 wins in both matches, with the victories marking their first of the spring season. They have improved to 13-5 on the year before last weekend’s match. As a tandem, Heren and Yauch are now tied for seventh on the CSU Doubles Wins List with 26 total wins as a doubles team.
Pine-Richland grad named to preseason Patriot League team
Grant Voytovich, a Pine-Richland grad, was named to the Preseason All-Patriot League squad for the Bucknell baseball team.
Voytovich last season was a mainstay in the middle of the Bison lineup and he also played a terrific right field. He slashed .293/.418/.500 and belted eight home runs, two of which were grand slams. Voytovich ranked ninth in the Patriot League in RBIs with 37, and he finished the year with four three-hit games and three four-hit games. One of the best performances of his career came in a crazy 17-14 win at Penn State, when he went 4-for-6 with a grand slam and six RBIs. He later topped that with a sevenRBI game at Lehigh that included a grand slam and a three-run shot.
Plum grad, Duquesne bowler feted
Shannon Small, a Plum grad, of the Duquesne bowling team was named Northeast Conference Bowler of the Week on Jan. 31.
In helping Duquesne win the Red Flash Invitational in Altoona, with an overall record of 12-1 (.923), Small was named Most Valuable Player MVP after claiming the individual crown. In traditional play to open the invite, Small knocked down 1,116 pins to lead the field.
Small recorded an average of 223.20 pins per game in traditional play at the Red Flash Invite, eclipsing 200 in four of her five games. Included in that was a high of 257 in a 999-785 victory against Saint Vincent as well as a 230 in a 952-695 triumph against Mount Aloysius.
The individual championship marked the second consecutive for Small at Holiday Bowl. At the 2023 Red Flash Classic, Small knocked down a total of 1,050 pins to post a 210 average. Small’s average of 223.20 at the Red Flash Invite places her in the top 10 for tournament averages in the Duquesne record book.
