PEEK AT ‘Broken Justice’

First trailer for season 2 of ‘American Rust’

“American Rust” is almost back, and it looks like things are about to get even gnarlier for the residents of Buell, Pa. Prime Video announced last month that Season 2 of the Western Pennsylvania-shot crime series had been dubbed “American Rust: Broken Justice” and will be released in its entirety March 28. On Monday, the streamer also dropped the first trailer for the show’s 10-episode sophomore outing.

Since “American Rust” premiered in fall 2021, you may want to check out this quick refresher on where Buell’s best and brightest found themselves after that game-changing Season 1 finale before pressing play on the “Broken Justice” trailer.

“’American Rust: Broken Justice’ takes us back to the fictional small town of Buell, Pennsylvania,” reads the “Broken Justice” plot description in Prime Video’s press release. “Del Harris (Jeff Daniels) and Grace Poe (Maura Tierney) try to rebuild their lives after the harrowing events of season one.

“Season Two picks up with a string of seemingly unrelated murders, hinting at a much larger conspiracy that threatens everyone in this small, tight-knit town.”

Monday’s news release also revealed that Prime Video will start streaming the nine- episode first season of “American Rust” on the same day that “Broken Justice” is set to premiere.

“American Rust” Season 1 had been available to rent or buy only via video on demand since its initial Showtime run. The network now known as Paramount+ with Showtime canceled “American Rust” in January 2022. It was resurrected for a second season that was expected to air on Amazon Freevee before being moved to Amazon’s flagship streaming service.

Most of the main Season 1 cast returned for “Broken Justice,” including Daniels, Tierney, Alex Neustaedter as Billy Poe, David Alvarez as Isaac English, Julia Mayorga as Lee English and Mark Pelligrino as Virgil Poe. They’re joined this go-around by newcomers like “Dexter” veteran Luna Lauren Velez, who makes her “American Rust” debut in Monday’s trailer as Pittsburgh Police detective Angela Burgos.

It had already been revealed that Burgos would be partnered with Del, who rejoined the Pittsburgh PD following his Season 1 transgressions. New Buell police Chief Steve Park (Rob Yang) remains suspicious about Del’s involvement in those horrific incidents.

“Broken Justice” was shot throughout Western Pennsylvania from November 2022 through April 2023. Coshowrunner Adam Rapp told the PostGazette last year that while a lot of

filming took place in nearby Aspinwall and Charleroi, “American Rust” Season 2 spent much more time in urban areas like Downtown, Mount Washington and the Strip District.

If you need a locally filmed content fix before March 28, Ethan Coen’s Pittsburgh-shot road trip comedy “DriveAway Dolls” is currently playing in theaters. “Unsinkable,” a Western Pennsylvania filmed independent drama chronicling Senate inquiries into the 1912 Titanic disaster, recently charted a course for an April 11-18 engagement at Sewickley’s Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center.

Theonly Hollywood project currently filming in this region is Season 3 of the Paramount+ show “Mayor of Kingstown.” Netflix horror film “The Deliverance,” which finished most of its principal photography in 2022, came back in spring 2023 for reshoots and was reportedly scheduled to return Monday for an additional scene.
