Duquesne women break into the semifinals

Dukes face No. 1 seed Richmond after tight victory

With a defensive stop in the final seconds, the Duquesne women’s basketball captured a 63-62 victory against the fourth- seeded George Mason (23-7) on Friday afternoon in the quarterfin­als of the Atlantic-10 tournament at the Henrico Sports & Events Center in Glen Allen, Va.

The Dukes (20-11) will play top-seeded Richmond at 11 a.m. Saturday.

In a game that featured nine different lead changes, Duquesne just squeaked by. After a couple fouls from Duquesne, the Patriots had 1.2 seconds left with the ball on the baseline. George Mason threw a lob pass to Zahirah Walton in the middle of the paint where her gamewinnin­g layup fell short as it was contested by Jerni Kiaku and junior Tess Myers. Kiaku recorded eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter. The sophomore guard collected a team- high three steals, all coming in the final 10 minutes while going 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.

Other women’s tourneys

Atlantic 10: Top-seeded Richmond was led by Addie Budnik’s 18 points against eighth- seeded Loyola Chicago. ... Peyton Kennedy had 22 points for seventh-seeded Saint Louis in its upset against second-seeded VCU. ... St. Louis will face Richmond in the semifinals.

Big 12: Sixth-seeded West Virginia ( 24- 6) beat 11thseeded Cincinnati, 70-55, in the second round of the tournament. West Virginia will face No. 3-seed Kansas State at 8 p.m. Saturday in the quarterfin­als. JJ Quinerly, the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, was the WVU’s scorer with 18 points. ... Sarah Andrews scored 13 points for No. 17 and fifthseede­d Baylor ( 24- 6) advanced with a 71- 60 win against Texas Tech.

Big Ten: Caitlin Clark broke the NCAA Division I record for 3-pointers in a season by a woman or man, finishing with 24 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists on a poor shooting night to lead secondseed­ed No. 4 Iowa past seventh-seeded Penn State, 9562, in the quarterfin­als. Iowa will face Michigan in the semifinals after the sixth-seeded Wolverines, beat third-seeded and No. 12 Indiana. ... Shyanne Sellers had 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to lead eighthseed­ed Maryland against fourth-ranked, regular-season champion and top- seeded Ohio State, 82-61. Maryland will face Nebraska in the semifinals.

ACC: Aziaha James scored 16 points and No. 10 and second-seeded North Carolina State (26-5) held off seventhsee­ded Duke in the quarterfin­als. N. C. State will face

sixth-seeded Florida State after its 78-65 win against thirdseede­d and No. 20 Syracuse ... Georgia Amoore scored 23 of her 27 points in the second half as No. 11 and

top-seeded Virginia Tech (246) advanced to the semis with a 55- 47 win against ninth-seeded Miami (Fla). ... Sonia Citron scored 26 points, and No. 14 and fourth -seeded Notre Dame beat fifth-seeded Louisville, 77-68, to advance to the semifinals against Virginia Tech.

SEC: Kamilla Cardoso scored 17 points as No. 1 and top-seed South Carolina ( 30- 0) beat ninth- seeded Texas A&M, 79-68, in the quarterfin­als. The Gamecocks will face fifth-seeded Tennessee, an 83-61 winner against Alabama, in the semifinal round. ... No. 8 LSU (27-7) raced to an early lead on the way to a 78-48 victory against seventh-seeded Auburn. LSU will face Mississipp­i in the semifinals.

Pac- 12: Hannah Jump scored 20 points for topseeded and No. 2 Stanford (27-4) rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit to beat fourthseed­ed and No. 13 Oregon State in the semifinals.

OVC: Tennessee Martin won its semifinal, and because Southern Illinois Edwardsvil­le is not eligible for the NCAA tourney, the Skyhawks gained the automatic bid.
