Duquesne women break into the semifinals
Dukes face No. 1 seed Richmond after tight victory
With a defensive stop in the final seconds, the Duquesne women’s basketball captured a 63-62 victory against the fourth- seeded George Mason (23-7) on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic-10 tournament at the Henrico Sports & Events Center in Glen Allen, Va.
The Dukes (20-11) will play top-seeded Richmond at 11 a.m. Saturday.
In a game that featured nine different lead changes, Duquesne just squeaked by. After a couple fouls from Duquesne, the Patriots had 1.2 seconds left with the ball on the baseline. George Mason threw a lob pass to Zahirah Walton in the middle of the paint where her gamewinning layup fell short as it was contested by Jerni Kiaku and junior Tess Myers. Kiaku recorded eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter. The sophomore guard collected a team- high three steals, all coming in the final 10 minutes while going 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
