Hinson earns first-team All-ACC recognition, other Pitt players haul in honors
As Jeff Capel’s team prepares for its trip to Washington, D.C., for the 2024 ACC tournament, a few of his players will arrive in the nation’s capitol with some recently earned accolades. Similar to last season, Pitt was well represented in this year’s ACC basketball all-conference recognition.
Headlining the Panthers was Blake Hinson, who received first-team All-ACC honors. Hinson became just the third player in program history to receive such recognition, joining Jamarius Burton (2023) and Justin Champagnie (2021). Coming off a 2023 campaign that earned him second-team All-ACC honors, Hinson proved to be one of the league’s top talents this winter, finishing the regular season averaging a team-best 18.8 points per game, along with averaging 4.6 rebounds and 0.8 assists a contest.
Carrington honored twice
Bub Carrington, who was named the league’s rookie of the week for the fifth time Monday morning, also received honorable mention All-ACC recognition and was named to the ACC’s All-Rookie team. Carrington enters postseason play with 22 double-figure scoring games, including four games with 20 or more points, and is the only freshman in the country averaging at least 13.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. Carrington finished third in voting for the ACC’s Rookie of the Year, which was won by Notre Dame’s Markus Burton.
Leggett Sixth Man of the Year
For the second straight season, Pitt was voted to have the best bench player in the conference. Ishmael Leggett, a junior guard who transferred to the program from Rhode Island last offseason, was deemed the league’s sixth man of the year, winning the honor by receiving 33 votes. Leggett closed the regular season averaging 11.9 points, an ACC-guard leading 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. The key veteran guard has scored in double figures 22 times and collected five or more rebounds in 19 games.
Capel close to repeat
After being named the ACC Coach of the Year in 2023, Capel came close to winning the award again this season, finishing in second place with 12 votes. North Carolina’s Hubert Davis was this year’s winner, receiving 49 votes. Davis’ Tar Heels enter the ACC Tournament as the top seed after winning the league in the regular season.
