Deacons move on in ACC

Wake Forest earns shot at Panthers

Kevin Miller scored 17 points, Hunter Sallis added 14 and Andrew Carr had a doubledoub­le to lead fifth-seeded Wake Forest to a 72-59 win Wednesday against 12th seed Notre Dame in the second round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament at Washington, D.C.

The Demon Deacons (2012) advanced to Thursday’s quarterfin­al against fourthseed­ed Pitt. The teams split in the regular season.

Carr had 12 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots and Cameron HIldreth scored eight of his 10 points in the second half. Wake Forest shot 46%, outscored Notre Dame 15-7 off turnovers, 16-7 on second-chance points and 38-14 in the paint.

ACC rookie of the year Markus Burton scored 21 points, making 12 of 12 from the line but only 4 of 16 from the floor for the Fighting Irish (13-20). Tae Davis added 16 points, but Braeden Shrewsberr­y — who scored 23 points in ND’s quarterfin­al win against Georgia Tech — scored just five on 1- of- 9 shooting.

Also in the ACC, No. 5 seed Clemson put its postseason hopes in a perilous position with a 76-55 loss to Boston College, which took a 12-point halftime lead and wasn’t threatened in the closing minutes. Claudell Harris Jr. scored 27 points for BC, which gets Virginia in the quarterfin­als.

Jamir Watkins scored 12 of his career-high 34 points in he final three minutes as No. 9 seed Florida State (17-15) defeated No. 8 Virginia Tech 8676 to advance to a quarterfin­al Thursday against top seed North Carolina.

North Carolina State pulled away in the second half for an 83-65 win against Syracuse. The Wolfpack will face Duke in the quarterfin­als.

Big 12: No. 20 BYU scored the game’s first 14 points and used a 12-0 run in the second half to cruise to an 87-73 victory against UCF at Kansas City, Mo ... TCU led from start to finish in a 77-70 win against Oklahoma. ... Kansas State, the No. 10 seed, surprised No. 7 Texas behind Tylor Perry’s 21 points and his four pressure- filled free throws down the stretch.

Big Ten: Penn State built a comfortabl­e 11-point lead at halftime and breezed to a 6657 win against Michigan. Zach Hicks’ 20 points lead the Nittany Lions, who will play Indiana on Thursday in the second round. ... Maryland scored the game’s first 11 points and breezed past Rutgers, 65-51.

Big East: Desmond Claude’s 26 points helped Xavier to a 76-72 win against Butler at Madison Square Garden. ... Providence blew out Georgetown behind Josh Oduro’s 20 points.
