Where to find St. Patrick’s Day food and drink specials in Pittsburgh

- By Karen Kadilak Karen Kadilak is a Pittsburgh freelance writer.

Corned beef and cabbage, clover-shaped pancakes and a drink that includes Lucky Charms cereal are some of the food and drink specials local restaurants are serving, or plan to dish up, on or around St. Patrick’s Day on Sunday.

Square Cafe in East Liberty is offering mint chocolate chip buttermilk pancakes cut into shamrock shapes and topped with chocolate chips, whipped cream and mint cream cheese frosting all month long. Irish mint mocha with peppermint Irish cream liqueur and dark chocolatebrewed espresso is a featured drink.

The Ritual House in Downtown Pittsburgh will use executive chef Edwin Smith’s family recipe for the corned beef with cabbage and red potatoes it will highlight on March 16, when Pittsburghers line city street’s for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade that begins at the intersection of Liberty Avenue and 11th Street, and ends at Commonwealth Place.

Drinks will include an End of the Rainbow cocktail made of Malibu rum, honeydew, coconut milk, pistachio and — for a sweet and magically delicious finish — Lucky Charms cereal.

Rather indulge with seafood? From March 15-17, the Atria’s and Juniper Grill chain will offer the Dublin Lawyer, a dish featuring seared bay scallops and shrimp tucked inside puff pastry with an Irish whiskey cream sauce. Other seasonal options include its popular slow-cooked corned beef and cabbage and Dublin Coddle, made with potatoes, bacon, cabbage and other vegetables.

“We like to give our guests a mix of comfort food and a touch of upscale items,” chef Jason Withers said.

An Irish mule consisting of Jameson Irish Whiskey, ginger beer and lime juice will be available, too.

Kahlil’s in Bloomfield will offer a Syrian take on a classic shepherd’s pie. The hearty casserole is made with lamb shank mixed with potatoes, peas, carrots and gravy packed into a baked pie crust made with Kerrygold Pure Irish Butter.

Bar Louie North Shore is serving a Reuben sandwich and an old fashioned made with Jameson Irish Whiskey, Guinness syrup, cocoa bitters and orange throughout the month.

“St. Paddy’s Day is typically one of our biggest days of the year and we expect this year to be no different,” said director of operations Ronald Graybeal.

The Commoner in Downtown Pittsburgh will include corned brisket hash with Guinness glaze and a fried egg at its brunches March 16-17. Green beer will be among drinks.

“We’ve got a pretty loyal following at brunch,” food and beverage director Blaise Malandra said. “St. Patrick’s Day Downtown is always exciting, though.

“We’ve prepared for St. Patrick’s Day like we do every other holiday or event. Our focus is always to enhance our guests’ experience while leaning into the theme of what we’re celebrating.”
