GCC moves into semis

The Greensburg Central Catholic and Everett girls basketball teams both had trouble scoring in the first half of Friday night’s PIAA Class 2A quarterfin­al. Things didn’t change for Everett in the second half, but Greensburg Central Catholic looked completely different.

Greensburg Central Catholic scored 39 points in the second half and romped past Everett, 56-26, at Forest Hills High School. The win puts Greensburg Central Catholic (23-6) into Monday’s semifinals against defending state champion Kennedy Catholic.

Not only was Greensburg Central Catholic’s offense strong in the second half, but the Centurions’ defense continued to clamp down, limiting Everett (20-8) to 12 points in the third and fourth quarters. Greensburg Central Catholic led by only 1714 at halftime.

Sophomore guard Erica Gribble led the Centurions with 20 points, Mya Morgan added 15 and Avery Davis 12. Abby Dlugos pulled down 13 rebounds.

Class 6A Spring-Ford 60, Norwin 47:

Norwin (23-4), the WPIAL champion, saw its season come to an end with a loss to Spring- Ford ( 24- 5) at State College. Back in early December on the same court, Spring-Ford also beat Norwin. This time, SpringFord, an eastern Pennsylvan­ia school located near Philadelph­ia, jumped out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back. Spring-Ford led 30-21 at the half. Katie Tiffan scored 16 points for SpringFord, while Kendall Berger led Norwin with 20.

Class 3A Mercyhurst Prep 54, Avonworth 41:

Mercyhurst Prep (24-3) took down Avonworth ( 24- 3) at Slippery Rock University. Mercyhurst Prep took a 23-2 lead after the first quarter. Becca Goetz paced Avonworth with 20 points.
