Hole too deep for Union in its 1A loss

Blackhawk moves on to 4A semifinals

-

Union has had a pattern to its game in the past two years.

After getting into a little bit of a hole, the Scotties get a motivating speech from head coach Rob Nogay, come out of the locker room and pull out a victory.

That didn’t happen on Saturday, however, as Bishop Guilfoyle dropped Union into too deep a hole and buried the Scotties in the second half in a PIAA Class 1A quarterfinal.

Freshman Maurie Querry had her way with the Union defense, as she racked up a team- high 18 points to lead three Bishop Guilfoyle ( 27- 3) players in double figures, as the District 6 champion Marauders lived up to their nickname with a 60- 43 victory against the 2023 state champions at Norwin High School. Bishop Guilfoyle jumped out to a 22- 8 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Senior forward Kelly Cleaver led Union with 24 points.

Class 5A

Cathedral Prep 39, Oakland Catholic 29: There was a possibility that McKeesport and Oakland Catholic could meet for the fourth time this season if the Eagles had found their way past the Ramblers. Instead, it will be the District 10 champions who move on. Cathedral Prep senior Jayden McBride, a Georgetown recruit, led the way with 14 points. Freshman Mia LeDonne paced the Eagles with 11 points.

Class 4A

Wyomissing 61, North Catholic 46: The Spartans ( 28- 0) lost to the Trojanettes ( 19- 8) in the 2023 state quarterfinals and returned the favor in the rematch this year. Harvard recruit Alayna Rocco did everything she could to keep North Catholic in it with five 3- pointers as part of her 20 points, while freshman Brady Wehner added 11 and Lauren Mihm 10, but it wasn’t enough.

Blackhawk 43, Fairview 19: The Cougars are on their way to the state semifinals for the second consecutive year after a dominating performance against the District 10 champion. Sophomore Aubree Hupp drained three 3pointers as part of her gamehigh 23 points to lead Blackhawk. The Tigers were held to seven points or fewer in every quarter.
