Pittsburgh River hounds SC rallied once Saturday on theroad against Louisville. It couldn’t do it twice and lost, 31.They are now a surprising 03-0 to start the USL Championsh­ip season.

Edward Kizza pulled the River hound seven early in the secondhalf, but Louisville’s Sean Totsch scored on a penalty and Ray Serrano added a goal in extra time.

Thegame was not without its highlights for the River hounds. Midfielder Kenardo Forbes tied the club’s record for career appearance­s. With 195games, he tied David Flavius(1999-2006) for most in franchise history.

Golf

Keith Mitchell capped off a magnificen­t closing stretch by one-hopping a shot in for eagle offthe 18th fairway — a shot that gave him a two-stroke lead going into the final round ofthe Valspar Championsh­ip at Innis brook in Palm Harbor, Fla. Mitchell was among a dozen players on the fringe of contention at a tournament so tight that it began with all 77 players who made the cut separated by a mere six shots. That changed when he went 32-2through the closing stretch, the first player to do that in tournament history.

St. Bonaventur­e athletic director Joe Manhertz resigned abruptly, the university announced Saturday, in the midst of questions regarding themen’s basketball program opting out from competing in the NIT without initially informing its players and fans. Manhertzci­ted travel logistics, injuries and the uncertaint­y of players potentiall­y entering the transfer portal, as reasons for informing the NIT selectionc­ommittee Sunday ofthe school’s decision to not beconsider­ed.

Baseball

J.D. Martinez and the New York Mets finalized a $12 million, one-year contract. Martinez,36, hit .271 with 33 homers and103 RBIs last year for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

•Peter Angel os, owner of the Baltimore Orioles from 1993 until passing operations onto his family a few years ago, died Saturday. He was 94. His death comes a month after his son announced a de alto sell the team to David Rub en stein.

Auto racing

Max Verstappen won the pole for the Australian Grand Prix. Verstappen has won the first two races of the Formula Oneseason. Carlos Sainz, comingback from appendix surgery, starts second.

•Felix Rosenqvist and Alex Palou will lead the field to greenin Sunday morning’s heat races that determine which12 Indy Car drivers will advance into the exhibition Thermal$1 million Challenge. Theall-star race will consist of only12 of Indy Car’s 27 drivers, butthe dozen who do compete will have to get into the event via a pair of earlier heat races.

Pro football

The Kansas City Chiefs reportedly have a trade in place to deal cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sneed would be dealt for Tennessee’s third-round pickin the 2025 NFL draft. In addition, the teams would swap seventh-round picks in thisyear’s draft.

•Cleveland is re-signing kicker Cade York, whose inconsiste­ncies led to him being cut before last season. The Browns a still have York’s replacemen­t, Dustin Hopkins. Hopkins was 33 of 36 on field goal attempts in 2023.

Winter sports

Ina surprising finale of the women’s World Cup season, Cornelia Huetter won the women’ s downhill in Saal bach-Hinter glen mm, Austria, to clinch her first title. Huetter hadnot won a downhill race in six years.

Tennis

No.2 ranked Carlos Alcaraz began his Miami Open campaignwi­th a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Roberto Carballés Baena. Alcaraz won his seventh match in a row. Also advancing Saturday were Jannik Sinner and Andy Murray.
