Dixon sets official visit

- By Noah Hiles

Jeff Capel’s staff has plenty of high-rated targets in the Class of 2025.

But among the entire bunch, few elite talents look to have more interest in Pitt than Derek Dixon, 6foot-4 shooting guard out of Gonzaga High School in Washington, D.C.

“They’ve been on me for a while,” Dixon said in an interview with On3.com, a national recruiting website and NIL database. “Coach Capel said that my game was sort of similar to his and he thought he could teach me a lot and that I would work well in that system.”

After making an unofficial visit to Oakland last year, Dixon announced earlier this week that he will make an official visit to Pitt on April 12.

The trip will mark his second official visit, with the first being to Syracuse. Dixon is also scheduled to visit Virginia on April 20.

In addition to the three aforementioned teams, Dixon is also receiving interest from Villanova and Virginia Tech.

Per numerous reports, Dixon is expected to make his collegiate decision this summer after his AAU season comes to an end.

Gatten visits again

The start of the spring football season also marked the beginning of unofficial and official visits for future recruiting classes.

With only one verbal commitment to its credit, Pitt will likely be aggressive this spring, starting with talent in its own backyard.

Earlier this month, the Panthers hosted Colsen Gatten, a standout linebacker from Central Catholic, for an unofficial visit. Gatten, who measures at 6foot-1, 205 pounds, was offered by Pitt last summer during his first unofficial visit.

Pitt will be the first of many stops on Gatten’s college tour this spring.

This month, he will also make unofficial visits to Duke and Nebraska, while next month, he will swing by Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Tennessee.

Gatten has yet to announce if there is a frontrunner for his recruitment, although it should be noted he has already made four unofficial visits to Penn State, which was also his first Division I offer.
