Yankees add to hot start

Reach 12-3 for first time since ’03

-

Juan Soto hit a three-run homer and Cody Poteet pitched six solid innings as the New York Yankees won 8-2 to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Guardians at Cleveland to continue one of the franchise’s hottest starts in history.

New York, which won the opener 3-2 behind Oswaldo Cabrera’s two-run homer, improved to 12-3, best record in the majors and the first time the Yankees have opened the season with that mark since 2003, when they made one of their 40 trips to the World Series.

It marks the seventh time in history New York has started 12-3 and lifts their road record to 8-1 this season.

“We do a great job of wearing down the starting pitching.” Aaron Judge said of the hot start.

Poteet allowed one run and six hits in picking up his first win since 2021 with Miami. He missed the 2023 season after Tommy John surgery and was signed by New York in the offseason to replenish some of the pitching depth used to acquire Soto.

Clay Holmes pitched the ninth in the opener, giving up a leadoff double before striking out two and getting a groundout for his MLB-leading sixth save.
